George M. Miller
Miller, George Martin (1916-2010)
Soldiers - United States - Virginia - Shenandoah County
Portrait of George Martin Miller in his U.S. Army uniform.
George was born in Jerome to Pius Martin (1876-1952) and Rebecca Frances (Nesselrodt) (1885-1969) Miller, a farming couple.
He married in April 1937 in Mt. Jackson. His bride was 16-year old Irene Pauline Spitler (1920-2004). She was the daughter of Mathias C. (1882-1949) and Mamie May (Whitmer) (1904-1983) Spitler. At that time, George was 21 years old and farmed in Jerome, probably on his father’s farm.
When he registered for the WWII draft, he worked for William B. Clark at Bird Haven Farm near Basye, Virginia. The wood-working factory stood on land owned by Mr. Clark and provided many local residents with income during the years it operated.
George served in the U.S. Army and by 1950, he had returned to the area. The census found both George and his wife, Irene, living in the Ashby District. Both were employed at a wood-crafting factory, probably Bird Haven Farm.
The couple had two daughters together: Sandra (Miller) Rinker and Betty Ann (Miller) Meadors.

Stanley Tobias Clem
Clem, Stanley Tobias (1927-2009)
Military personnel - United States - Virginia - Shenandoah County
Portrait of Stanley Tobias Clem (1927-2009) wearing his Civil Air Patrol uniform. The markings on his shoulder indicate he was a cadet in this photo.
Stanley was one of at least ten children born to Tobias Samuel (1887-1957) and Maggie Catherine (Walters) (1896-1952) Clem, a farming couple in Fort Valley.
Stanley Clem grew up in Fort Valley and was a 1946 graduate of Edinburg High School. He served in the U.S. Civil Air Patrol during WWII. After school, he landed a job with Bethlehem Steel as a crane operator at their plant at Sparrow Point, Maryland.
In 1947, he was the best man at his brother, Paul’s, wedding in Baltimore, Maryland.
A year later, Stanley married Barbara Jean (Donovan) Clem in Baltimore. The couple was married for 8 years before divorcing in 1958. They had two children together, however, one of them, Ronald Lee Clem (1955-1955) was born prematurely, and did not live.
He married for the second time in 1960. His bride was Genevieve Strickler, a clerk living in Arlington but born in Woodstock. Her parents were Thomas and Olive Bertha (Sibert) Strickler. Stanley and Genevieve had at least one daughter together, Amy Loraine Strickler.
When Stanley died, he was in Los Angeles County, California. His remains were buried in Fort Valley.

Charles F. Lichliter
Lichliter, Charles Franklin "Jack" (1914-1989)
Military personnel - United States - Virginia - Shenandoah County
Portrait of Charles F. Lichliter wearing his U.S. Army Air Force uniform.
Charles was from Strasburg, the third of at least six children born to Walter Franklin (1883-1962) and Mary Catherine (Fishel) (1884-1974) Lichliter.
In 1920, the census found the family living on Capon Grade in the Davis District of Shenandoah County. His widowed grandfather, John L. Lichliter, lived with them. His father worked as a cooper for the lime works.
Ten years later, the family lived on Capon Street in Strasburg. They owned their home and Charles’ father was listed as a general laborer.
Charles married Edith Virginia Himelright in Hagerstown, Maryland, in 1935. She was born in Frederick County, the daughter of Charles Oliver (1879-1946) and Vernie M. (Sherman) (1888-1958) Himelright. When they married, she lived in Star Tannery.
Their home in 1940 was Oranda, near Strasburg. Charles worked as a contractor at the stone quarry and Edith looked after their 3-year old daughter, Connie (Lichliter) Himelright (1936-2014). His WWII draft registration that year specified the National Gypsum and Lime Company as his employer.
Charles served in the U.S. Army from 1944-1946. Probably, this photograph was taken during that time.
The 1950 census found Charles living on East King Street in Strasburg and working as a taxi driver. His wife, Edith, worked as a doffer at the American Viscose plant in Front Royal. (Her obituary noted she retired from the plant after 30 years of service). Her widowed mother, Vernie, lived with them and their two children, Connie and Gene Allen Lichliter.
When he died, his death certificate listed his occupation as a retired iron worker.
