Samuel Jefferson Artz on "Mike"
Artz, Samuel Jefferson (1837-1918)
Photograph of Samuel Jefferson Artz astride his horse, "Mike".
Samuel Artz was born at the family farm near Edinburg. The beginning of the Civil War found the 24 year old farmer, orphaned and unmarried, ready and willing to enlist with a local company of volunteers known as the "Southern Grays".
He served for about a year then went home, continued to farm, married, and had nine children.
After the war, Samuel made his living as a tenant farmer and as a trainer of draught horses. He and his family moved frequently in search of work in the war-ravaged region.
One of the family's homes was at the "Four Mile House" located on Route 11 near the Fishers Hill Battlefield.
Samuel died in Toms Brook and both he and his wife are bured in the Zion Church Cemetery near Maurertown.

Maynard Emory Artz
Artz, Maynard Emory
Portrait of Maynard Emory Artz as a senior in high school.
This photograph was used in the 1925 Strasburg High School yearbook. The yearbook staff wrote this about him:
"Marty" entered High School with us in 1921. He is known for having a quiet or almost silent disposition, never speaking unless he is spoken to. He dispenses with his duties as only a loyal friend and member of our class can. We know he isn't a woman hater, yet he has not found a girl to suit him. Maynard is a good all-round sport, and a good-hearted boy, full of determination, which means success."

James M. Artz was born in Hardy County, West Virginia, the eldest of at least six children born to James Peter (1845-1920) and Cedena Catherine (Poland) (1857-1950) Artz. He married Lettie Irene Schaeffer in 1905. She was born in Quicksburg and her parents were John Lee (1843-1919) and Alice (Kibler) (1857-1944) Schaeffer.
The 1910 census found James and Lettie raising two young children, Lois and John P. Ten years later, there were four children in the family. James farmed all his life in rural Woodstock although in the 1940 census, he also worked as a salesman in a general store.
Lois F. Artz appeared as one of six children living at home in 1930. She married Odin Guy Sheetz (1892-1965) in 1933. In both the 1940 and 1950 censuses, Lois “Sheetz” was still married but living with her parents on the farm. Her husband was not listed. She stayed with her parents for many years and her obituary noted she had been an active member of Emanuel Lutheran Church in Woodstock throughout her life.
