An account of the resource
Postcard showing what was identified as "Harmony Hall (Fort Bowman)" in Strasburg Virginia. The card has a copyright date of 1935 and contains the caption "'Harmony Hall' (Fort Bowman) Strasburg, Virginia. Oldest House in Shenandoah County. Built in 1752-3-4."
Constructed ca. 1753 for George Bowman, the structure now called simply Fort Bowman, it is one of the oldest homes surviving structures in Shenandoah County. Apart for a small Greek Revival portico addition, the house is almost unchanged from its original Germanic stone design.
The home is located along an undisturbed section of the Old Valley Pike and its graveyard contains the burial sites of Isaac Bowman who assisted George Rogers Clark and Samuel Kerchval, early Shenandoah Valley Historian.

Description
An account of the resource
In 1899 Hugh Morrison Jr. opened a photograph studio on W. Court Street in Woodstock after several years of working in the area as a travelling photographer.
Between that time, and the time his grandson James Morrison closed the studio in 1988, the Morrison family captured thousands of portraits, landscapes, and buildings on film and glass negatives.
In 1999 the Shenandoah County Historical Society acquired over 31,000 of these negatives from the estate of local collector Charles D. Bauserman. Volunteers from the historical society worked over the next several decades to house, number, and scan each image. This effort resulted in over two tons of Morrison plates and negatives being processed and digitized.
This collection contains those digitized versions of these photographs.
Through a partnership between the historical society and the Shenandoah County Library's Truban Archives access to a growing number of these images is available to the public. Current projections indicate the full collection will be available for viewing sometime in 2028.
This collection does contain some images of a sexual and/or graphic nature that some viewers may find inappropriate.

Emma Fravel Coffelt
Subject
The topic of the resource
Coffelt, Emma J. Fravel (1849- before 1920)
Description
An account of the resource
Emma was born in Edinburg to Samuel (1809-1887) and Mary (Painter) (1814-1888) Fravel. Her mother was from Indian Fort Farm.
She grew up in a farming family in Edinburg and appears there with her family in the 1860, 1870, and 1880 censuses.
By 1900, she had been married to Perry Samuel Coffelt (1848-1930) for seven years. He was originally from Lantz Mills, the son of William and Catherine Coffelt, and worked as a house painter when he was young. He had been married once before. By 1900, however, Perry was listed as 52-year old farmer. Ten years later, the couple appeared together again and lived on Koontz Road. By 1920, however, Emma’s husband was a widow living with his sister, Annie.

Identified by Nancye L. Bowman, great great niece of Ellen Fravel Coffelt. She identified the subject as "Ellen Fravel Coffelt" but after further research, we believe it was Emma. There was a sister, Martha Ellen, who was older but she never married.

Description
An account of the resource
Photograph of Ernest William and Luther Ames Zirkle as young children. They were the sons of Clarence Ernest and Bertie Ellen (Bowman) Zirkle, a farming couple from New Market, Virginia.
Ernest William Zirkle played baseball for New Market High School and is mentioned in the 1954 yearbook. He married Sylvia Burnette in 1958 while both of them lived in Blacksburg, Virginia. Ernest married a second time more than a quarter century later, in 1984, to Cynthia “Cindy” A. Bretnall. When his brother died in 2017, Ernest was living near Bridgeton, New Jersey, and was a veterinarian.
Luther Ames graduated from New Market High School in 1957 and Virginia Polytechnic Institute in 1962. He worked as an extension agent for the VPI Cooperative Extension Service. In 1963, he married Carolyn Lee Peters (1941-2018) and spent much of his married life in Cumberland, Cumberland County, Virginia, where he raised a son, Ernest Bruce Zirkle, and a daughter, Amy (Zirkle) Warlitner.
He moved back to New Market in 1991 to assist his parents in their final years. Unfortunately, he suffered a stroke in 1994 and was never able to return to Cumberland. In 2002, he moved into the Masonic Home of Virginia where he resided until his death.
