Copy of an older tin-type image of Ephriam Mowery, son of John Mowery. Ephriam served in the Confederate Army in Company G of the 2nd Virginia Infantry. He died on April 14, 1865, in Elmira, N.Y. He is buried in Woodlawn National Cemetery in Elmira (Grave number 2601).

Portrait of George Alva Boyer in his later years. He became the oldest living Confederate Veteran in Woodstock before he died.
During the Civil War, Mr. Boyer served with Company E of the 35th Battalion (also known as White's Battalion) of the Virginia Cavalry.

Omar Funk Pirkey was from Strasburg, Virginia, where he was a member of the Strasburg Christian Church.
Mr. Pirkey was a Confederate Veteran. A photograph published in the Free Press on September 26, 2002, showed him standing with a group of Civil War Veterans at Stickley Hall in Woodstock.
His parents were John Calvin (1816-1887) and Flora E.(Funk) (1820-1851) Pirkey.
He married Mary Virginia Lehew in 1874. She lived from 1855 to 1944.
Both Omar and his wife are buried in Riverview Cemetery in Strasburg.

The group photograph was taken at an event honoring Civil War Confederate Veterans at Stickley Hall in Woodstock in January 1924. A similar photograph was published in the Free Press on September 26, 2002, commemorating the earlier reunion.
Omar Funk Pirkey was from Strasburg, Virginia, where he was a member of the Strasburg Christian Church.
His parents were John Calvin (1816-1887) and Flora E.(Funk) (1820-1851) Pirkey.
He married Mary Virginia Lehew in 1874. She lived from 1855 to 1944.
Both Omar and his wife are buried in Riverview Cemetery in Strasburg.

Portrait of William Harvey Riffey, Confederate Veteran and farmer, from the Woodstock area of the county. His parents were George and Polly (Book) Riffey. He married Sarah (Hollar) Riffey and had many children.
During the Civil War, William H. Riffey served in Company K of the 12th Virginia Cavalry. Before he died, he was the oldest Confederate Veteran still living in Shenandoah County.

Samuel Jefferson Artz on "Mike"
Artz, Samuel Jefferson (1837-1918)
Photograph of Samuel Jefferson Artz astride his horse, "Mike".
Samuel Artz was born at the family farm near Edinburg. The beginning of the Civil War found the 24 year old farmer, orphaned and unmarried, ready and willing to enlist with a local company of volunteers known as the "Southern Grays".
He served for about a year then went home, continued to farm, married, and had nine children.
After the war, Samuel made his living as a tenant farmer and as a trainer of draught horses. He and his family moved frequently in search of work in the war-ravaged region.
One of the family's homes was at the "Four Mile House" located on Route 11 near the Fishers Hill Battlefield.
Samuel died in Toms Brook and both he and his wife are bured in the Zion Church Cemetery near Maurertown.
