Garnett Coverstone was still single when he registered for the WWI draft. His emergency contact was listed as “Mrs. D.F. Frederick, Postmaster, Waterlick”. At that time, he worked and lived on his family’s farm in Fort Valley.
Garnett was a son of John Edward and Ida Susan (Ritenour) Coverstone. He married for the first time in 1922. His bride was Mary Margaret Burke (1899-1938), the daughter of Robert and Lydia (Cullers) Burke. The couple had a daughter together before she died. In the 1940 census, Garnett was widowed and lived with his 11-year old daughter, Maria, and a housekeeper, on his farm in Fort Valley.
Two years later, he married Alva Virginia Shiley (1920-1998) from Frederick County. She was the daughter of James Samuel and Attie Gertrude (Newcome) Shiley.
