LETTER
Vaucouleurs on the 2nd May 1919
Dear friend,
I had a real pleasure the other day on receiving your letter and knowing your son’s arriving home.
Have no doubt that merrily will, you live now, for Don sure personifies mirth.
Please give him the best regards from the whole family and say that he forget us not and that I go to America perhaps before very long.
My mother participates in your joy.
Do you think that peace will soon be made what do they say about it in your country?
A great many americans are leaving France and we will soon see no more; it will be painful, for most of the French soldiers have been killed.
Write me soon a letter a thousand pages in length and kindly accept a big kiss.
As ever I remain
Your little friend

Description
An account of the resource
This photograph shows a portion of the "wagonner shed" that was located along the Valley Turnpike (US Route 11) in Edinburg Virginia.
The shed was used by crews operating freight wagons on the Valley Turnpike. These wagons carried produce and other local export items to ports and larger markets, typically Alexandria or Baltimore.
This shed was a stopping point where crews could rest themselves and their teams over night. During the Civil War it was used to house Federal Troops.
The structure was originally located in front of the house located at 211 S. Main Street in Edinburg. At the time of its construction, this property was owned by Phillip Grandstaff whose children Mary and Press lived in the house that still stands on the site. Later the shed was moved to the rear of the house which now houses Edinburg Trucks Hobby Shop and no longer stands.

Bondage Biographies: Enslaved People of Shenandoah County
Description
An account of the resource
In 2018, the Truban Archives began compiling information to create a searchable database of enslaved people in Shenandoah County during the years 1772 to 1865. Under the direction of the archivist, several volunteers pored over various resources to compile spreadsheets of information. The data compiled included the following information (if known): names, names of enslavers, locations related to the person, birthdates, relationships, what happened to them (e.g., emancipation, willed, ran away), the records’ citations, and other notable information.
The resources used to discover this information are varied, and all can be found at the Truban Archives. Volunteers examined newspaper clippings and several books, including abstracts of wills, research notebooks, births indexes, and a publication on the history of Edinburg, Virginia.
Once the data of several hundred people were assembled, the spreadsheet was uploaded to the digital archives for public consumption. More people will be uploaded as the research progresses.
Though much information has been found and made available to the public, unfortunately, Bondage Biographies: Enslaved People of Shenandoah County Collection will never truly be completed. This is due to lost records, including missing newspaper copies and unrecorded information. Because of this, the collection is an ongoing process, with more entries being made as new information is discovered.

Description
An account of the resource
In 1975 Dorothy L. Campbell became a clerk at the post office in Woodstock. A Shenandoah Valley-Herald report on her hiring noted she had a high score of over 96 on the Civil Service examination needed to secure that position. According to Postmaster Charles Sheetz, she was the first female employee of that office.
A native of Edinburg Virginia, Dorothy was 27 years old and had formerly worked at the Edinburg Aileen Plant. She told the Shenandoah Valley-Herald she enjoyed working at the post office and looked forward to a “long and successful career.” Her favorite part of the job was having a set series of rules to be followed and commented “the other employees have been most cooperative.”
When asked about female employees Postmaster Charles Sheetz told the Shenandoah Valley-Herald the Postal Service did not discriminate based on sex and added “If a woman can do the work that was formerly reserved for me, she should not only have the job but also the wages that go with it.”
