Hugh Roland Funk
Funk, Hugh Roland
Portrait of Hugh Roland Fund as a senior in high school.
This photograph was used in the 1925 Strasburg High School yearbook. The yearbook staff wrote about him:
"Poley" is very well liked. Not only is he always ready to have a good time, but he is also ready to help in the preparation of one. If any one needs help anywhere at any time Roland is always willing and ready to offer his assistance. All due credit is due him for his faithful work on the "Shenandoah" as advertising manager. Every possible effort is always made a feature of everything he undertakes. September will find Roland a diligent student of pharmacy at the Medical College of Virginia, where we are sure he will perform his duties as faithfully as he has at S.H.S."

Portrait of Melvin Cristy Funk as a senior in high school.
This photograph was used in the 1925 Strasburg High School yearbook. The yearbook staff wrote this about Melvin:
"Of all the members of our class "Pinto" is unquestionably the one who possesses the keenest sense of humor and is the most optimistic. He never fails to see humor in everything and treats none of his work with undue levity, and in spite of the fact that the word "study" means to him "Nausea", he manages to give a good account of himself in his studies as well as athletics and dramatics, and affords us a good laugh by his humorous sayings and unfailing wit. From SHS Melvin is going to take up newspaper work."

Charles Cooley
Cooley, Charles Edward (1917-1998)
Photograph of two separate portrait images of Charles Edward Cooley as a young man.
Charles was born in Amherst, Virginia, the son of Clarence Walter Cooley, a traveling salesman born in Warrenton, and Sadie (McGraw) Cooley, born in Amherst. He grew up mostly on W. King Street, Strasburg, and was one of five children.
He graduated from Emory and Henry College in Washington County, Virginia, and served as a Lieutenant in the U.S. Navy during WWII.
In 1943, while still a Navy Officer, Charles married Marian Paige Stover. She was born in Strasburg, the daughter of Frank Carson and Mary Virginia (Funk) Stover. The couple raised three children together: Craig Stover Cooley, Cela Annette (Cooley) Watson, and Cynthia Paige (Cooley) Conine.
After the war, he continued his education with a Master’s Degree in Education from the University of Richmond. He also did graduate level work at the University of Virginia and the University of Colorado School of Banking.
Charles worked as a teacher, coach and then Assistant Principal at Strasburg High School. After that, he and his family moved to Rockingham County where Charles was the Principal of Harrisonburg High School from 1949-1957.
From education, Charles moved to banking. He worked as an executive Vice President of the former Harrisonburg Loan and Thrift Corporation which later became part of Crestar Bank. During the late 1960s, he joined Rockingham National Bank as vice president, retiring in the early 1980s.
While in Harrisonburg, he was active in the community. He served two terms on the Harrisonburg School Board and was on the Harrisonburg Recreation Commission. He was a founder of the city’s United Way and its educational television station. He was also a member of the Northampton and Harrisonburg Education association and the Harrisonburg Rotary Club.
He moved back to Strasburg after he retired and lived on Crim Drive. Having taken up golf in the 1950’s, it was, perhaps, unsurprising, that he died of a sudden heart attack while on the third hole of the Bowling Green County Club in Front Royal. He was 81 years old.

Miguel "Mike" Chellini
Chellini, Miguel "Mike" Angel Jr. (1924-1992)
Portrait of Miguel "Mike" Chellini, of Venezuela and Woodstock.
Miguel “Mike” Angel Chellini, Jr. was born in Caracas, Venezuela, to Miguel Angel Chellini, Sr. and Jaunita De Riera. When he was 16 years old, Mike was sent to America to attend school at Massanutten Academy in Woodstock.
In 1943, Mike registered for the WWII draft. He was still a student and “Col. H.J. Benchoff” was listed as his emergency contact. Mike was described as being 63.5 inches tall and 147 pounds.
Later that year, Mike enlisted in U.S. Navy in Roanoke. That Christmas, while stationed at the Great Lakes Naval Training Station in Chicago, he came back to Woodstock for a visit.
After his Navy service, Mike returned to Woodstock and married Charlotte Marie Funk in August 1946. She was one of many children born to Oliver Milton (1898-1980) and Florence Virginia (Fogle) (1900-1994) Funk. Charlotte was a lifelong Woodstock resident and member of the St. John Bosco Catholic Church there.

In 1950, a new paint and building specialties store opened next to the A&P store on South Main Street in Woodstock. It was owned by Daniel Burner Jr. but managed by Michael Chellini.
In 1953, the family travelled back to Venezuela for a six-month visit with Mike’s parents and other relatives. After their return, the couple sold their home near Readus and bought a home and land on the Shenandoah River southeast of Woodstock.
For the next several years, Mike Chellini was mentioned often in the newspaper because of his involvement with the community. In 1959, he taught tennis for the Woodstock Jaycees. Later, he was named “Treasurer” of the local Jaycees organization. He also was active in the Woodstock Little League and in June 1960, he was a Woodstock delegate to the Virginia Republican convention in Roanoke.
At some point in the mid-sixties, Mike was hired by the Shenandoah County Public School system to teach Spanish at Central High School. His photograph appears as a faculty member in various Central High School yearbooks between 1966 and 1979. In fact, he was also pictured as the coach of the junior varsity football team in 1969.

Michael “Mickey” Angel Chellini, III, grew up in Woodstock. His parents were Miguel "Mike" Angel Chellini, Jr. (1924-1992) and Charlotte Marie (Funk) Chellini (1926-2017).
As a child, he played tennis in the local league and attended Central High School initially. Then, in September, 1963, he was one of only twelve day students (in a class of 350 cadets) entering Massanutten Academy for its 65th year. The 1966 MMA yearbook includes his photograph with these accolades: “Corporal … Asst. Squad Leader … Junior Varsity Football … Thousand Merit Club … Gearing Rifles … Ambition: Engineer … 3 years at MMA … Poe.”
In 1972, Mickey married Patricia Ann Barb (1952 - ). She was born in Orkney Springs to Philip William Barb, Sr., and Ruby Florence (Biller) Barb. The couple had at least one son and raised their family in the Woodstock area.

Charlotte (Funk) Chellini
Chellini, Charlotte Marie (Funk) (1926-2017)
Portrait of Charlotte Funk Chellini, a lifelong Woodstock resident.
Charlotte was one of many children born to Oliver Milton (1898-1980) and Florence Virginia (Fogle) (1900-1994) Funk.
Charlotte was a lifelong Woodstock resident and member of the St. John Bosco Catholic Church there.
In August 1946, she married Miguel "Mike" Angel Chelini, Jr. (1924-1992), a graduate of MMA born in Venezuela. He was a Spanish teacher at Central High School for several years and active in the community.
Two years later, the couple bought a house and 3 acres near Readus, west of Woodstock, for $7,000.
During their years together, the Northern Virginia Daily newspaper reported on several of their family’s milestones including a visit from Mike’s relatives from Venezuela, the birth of their son, Michael, and a large 50th wedding anniversary party held at their home for Charlotte’s grandparents.
Mike and Charlotte had two sons, Michael III, and Richardo Anthony Chellini. Unfortunately, Richardo died unexpectedly when he was just 18 years old.
