Front: Dear Maw,
I found this card in the PX and thought the old lady might like it. I don’t have that ration card. You ask about the weather here. We have had one rain and the weather has gotten rather cool. The ringworm is getting well. Well Maw I’m on the rifle range now and am going to try for expert. Love Joe.
Reverse: To A Marine’s Mother by Riley Scott
Whether on the stormy ocean
Or some tropic island's shore,
In the battle's wild commotion
Or the city's friendly roar,
Thy dear face is e'er beside me
In these tragic days of war-
Thy sweet smile doth ever guide me
Like a friendly beacon-star.

Dear Family
I just returned to the main post from the rifle range and I sure am glad. I decided not to write until I shot for record so now that it’s over am sending the scores I made on the range.
On the 30 cal rifle I made marksman-199 points out of 250
Pistol Sharpshooter 84 “ ” ” 100
Grenade expert 87 “ ” ” 100
Rising submachine gun 100 “ “ “ 100 expert
And now ( how)
I get medals for all of those and I can get one more for bayonet. The 30 cal rifle is the most important and as long as you qualify you do alright but if you don’t qualify it’s pretty bad--well I qualified. I shot much better up until second day but then I slipped but I qualified so I’m ok. I don’t think I did so bad do you? We have about two more weeks here and then I hope we shove off. I don’t know about music yet and I’ll have to do what they say. Well it’s nearly taps so I have to close. Boy am I tired.
XXXXXOOOO [last O has “sid” inside]
P.S. I lost a rain coat that cost $4.00 and someone stole 5.00 so please send me $3.00. I will pay the Dr [or ditto] in about 2 weeks send two pairs heavy white athletic socks and two cakes of toilet soap. It won’t happen again.
P.S. again. Yes I do my own washing and ironing.
More Love & Kisses Joe

I am out of boot camp now and in the band if I passed the audition. Well I couldn’t write for about a week because you’re not allowed when you ship out. I moved about ½ miles into some swell barracks. Well I got the boxes and thanks Millions. I’ll get paid again the 20th and try to send the $10 then, if you can pay him and I’ll pay you. I get off every night now and every weekend but no can get home. If I can get a 72 hr. leave I’ll try and get home after Christmas. No chance of getting there Christmas. I won’t get to buy very expensive Christmas presents but I’ll send a few, just family and a few friends. Send me the dates of all family birthdays. You know my memory on those things. I had even forgotten my own, til cards started coming. I went to Savannah over the weekend-- didn’t touch a drop either. This Marine Corps. sure is a swell outfit when you’re out of boot camp. I haven’t been issued a clarinet yet. It may be a few weeks before I am. I had written Wallace a letter which he evidently didn’t get so I’ll answer again today. The reason I can’t send that $10 now is because I spent about $15 bucks) for shoes, belt, cap, emblems which we need but aren’t issued during War Time. Tell Sid congratulations and her card arrived about 4 days ago. Well so long till next time Love to all Joe
P.S Dad I’m still waiting for that letter.

Dear Family,
I would have written sooner but I have been waiting to get the box. I went to the post office but they said I would have to wait until it was sorted out and sent to my headquarters and that would take a few days. I received the money in the nick of time and spent a fine Christmas in Kingston with the Heath family and took the place of their son who is in the army, but sure wish I could have been home. Well I still don’t know about my furlough or if I get it Jan 4. But I sure hope so. If I don’t get home then I’ll be a sad sack of shoestrings.
Tell Wallace I hope to see him soon and to have things fixed for my furlough. Well so-long till later. Love Joe

Dear Mother & All,
I have been transferred again, and am now in New River, NC. I Guess I am of more value to the USMC here than in the band at PI. I was transferred the day I received your last letter. Which was Dec .11. I guess they think I’ll be able to fight better than I can play a clarinet. My address is

Over please,
I don’t especially like it here yet but I’ll get used to it. I won’t go over any sooner than I would have had I stayed in PI and my work won’t be any more dangerous. The life of a band member when they go over as stretcher bearer or messenger is about 5 minutes under fire so I guess I’m better off. Not that I am worried. I’ll probably get a 7 day furlough the first of Jan. but not much chance of Christmas. I’m am spending the weekend here because camp life is so dead I couldn’t hardly stand it, the people here in Kingston are swell. A Lady gave my two buddies and I a room for a dollar a piece which is very good. One nite she and her daughter slept on a mattress on the floor and gave two boys her bed, that happened last summer she said. She sure is a nice lady. Tell everyone my change of address and I’ll try and write every one now. I have written Wally again. He didn’t get my last letter. Well good by till I hear from you.

Letter:
Dear Mother & All
I haven’t heard from you since I was transferred to this base. I don’t know if you received my letter or not but am still waiting for your answer. I’m not going to send any Christmas presents home because I have applied for a furlough starting Jan 4 and going to the 12 and I’ll bring them. You can either send me mine or wait until I get home to give it to me and by the way leave the tree up till I get there. I’m not sure I’ll get the furlough the 4th but I will get one either the first or last of Jan. If I get the furlough I have to have the price of a round trip ticket so please send me as near to $18 as you can but in being transferred and getting the furlough I miss two paydays and won’t get paid until Jan 20 and I need $12 to get home and back. I’ll explain in detail when I get home. I have been invited by the church in Kingston to a Christmas dinner and that’s another reason for the amount needed being $18 instead of $15 or twelve. I may send a telegram for the money so this letter will explain it and if it don’t I will when I get there & and I can pay you back the 20th. And I really need it. The people in the Church in Kingston really are swell and a lady gave my buddy and I a room free every time we come. {the girls are nice too HA} she and her husband had two fellows stay over weekends with them last year and she wants two that don’t drink and are nice again this year. My buddy’s name is Johnny Di Lavose [or Di Lavone] we sang in the choir after church on some special numbers and they think we’re pretty good. {By the way the quickest way to get money here is by telegram I’m broke Ha. Ha.} It’s a Methodist church but tell
Miss Bess F that the Methodist are sure swell down here Ha. The ladies at the USO in Kingston really like me because I complimented them on their fine work and they are getting me in with some of the nicest people in town. One lady is getting me a date with the nicest girl {I think Ha} Well that’s all for now see you soon I hope. Love Joe XXoXXooooXX
P.S. In case you haven’t gotten the point yet your son is broke. More love
XXXXOOO xo for Sid and Joe

Dear Family, Well, here I am in camp. I got in at 11 last night, so I made good time. I didn’t date feller in D. C. because I met an old girlfriend right after I left you and I took her out. I have nothing to do now because the company is on guard duty and not in the area but I think I will have the guard Sunday night. I can’t think of anything else to say because I told you everything, but tell everyone hello for me.
Lots of love, Joe xxxooo

Dear Family,
Here goes another try at writing another letter. We just had our Sat. inspection which by the grace of god and plenty of elbow grease on my rifle I passed. Write Wally and tell him to send his address I lost his. I got the box and the cakes were swell, I got three of them and the fellows got the rest but quick.
The next box you can send some wash clothes and soap, at present I need nothing else. The clarinet arrived in fine shape and I am already driving the guys crazy. They are having a dance tonite in our mess hall and I am to have a part in the entertainment, imitation and a gag with the clarinet, wish me luck.
I have been going with a Spanish girl by the name of Estella Sato [Soto?] she is really very nice and cute. I met her in Oceanside and I haven’t been to L.A. for 3 weeks. I had to stop to sign the pay roll. I get $25 Thursday.
Ha. Just stopped again to eat noon chow. Meat loaf was pretty good. Most of the fellows have gone on liberty. But I’m broke so I’ll go to the dance tonite.
Yes I got the money in time at Easter and if I hadn’t bought that car I would have plenty now. Well I can stay in till next weekend.
Tell Mac. to write I’ll be glad to hear from her. We have a library here now so I can get plenty of reading material. Stine just came in. He’s on Mess duty and is he pissed off & mad, ha.
Say did I tell you I had a black eye? Well a fellow and I had an argument and finally I saw his point, Ha.
Guess I’ll sign off for now so long till later.
All My Love,
Joe
P.S. Tell dad to write.

Letter:
Dear Family,
It’s Sunday and I have the duty so I’m in the Barracks. The only question I can remember is the name of my “louie.” His name is Adam A. “Krisstowich” and as you can see he is a Polack.
47 of the fellows in my company were transferred to a replacement but I’m still here, they’re going to get 7 more I heard. I don’t know whether they will send me or not.
I got a letter from my wife to be in Strasburg last week. She graduated and is working in Martinsburg, W.Va. You and she are the only people I hear from anymore. I haven’t heard from Dot or Va., lately and I wrote Leila the other day. I guess you know I got the box and clarinet ok. I was going to send a picture for mother’s day but it cost about $5.00 and I ran out of money. I’m going to wait til next payday.
I guess I’ll make PFC someday but I don’t know when. I’ll let you know when the glorious event takes place. I enjoyed Dad and Erma’s letter and want more. You both can write a letter a week and Mother the same amount she always does and I won’t kick.
Dad I think we have those fellows by the ass but it will be some time till we knock their heads together, but I hope not long.
Erma I enjoyed the drawings and your writing. Certainly has improved. Before long you will be the west [sic] writer in the family, even better than me, Ha.
Well I think I’ll write to Wally and then go to the shoe [sic] if I can get someone to stand by for me.
Love to all,
Joe

Tent Camp No 2 Camp Pendleton, Calf, Sat.
Dear Dad,
I’m out in the field about 20 miles from camp, we have been here since Mon. and will be here till Wed. We get back Thursday Morning and then get a 72 hr. leave. I didn’t think we could send letters from here so brought no equipment with me so that’s why I’m using this paper [torn out of a note book ] and a pencil about 1 ½” long.
I wanted to write soon so you would get this tomorrow but we have been going all week. We were on the go 17 hrs. yesterday. You should see me. I haven’t shaved since Sunday, and I have about a half of an inch of beard on my chin and face. I look like blue beard.
They are making a movie out here called Guadalcanal Diary and they used us to make a beach landing so now I have been in movies. Who knows, maybe you will even be able to see me when it comes out.
Yes I do like that girl in Strasburg quite a lot. I think she is super duper, but I ain’t married yet, not by a damn sight.
Well Pappy I haven’t been drunk yet but I can see a guy’s point after going though what we did this week.
They are having a smoker tonite some fights and free beer. The Captain said two bottles would probably knock use on our ass after being away a week, but it won’t bother me because that’s about all I ever drink in a week anyhow. Well here’s wishing you a happy Father’s day.
Love,
Joe
P.S. Why don’t you buy Elvin’s Store when he gets in the Army. We’ll make it Hines & Son and take stuff to the City when I come home. Ha.

Dear Mother,
Here I am out in the field again and on mess duty, too. The fellow that kept me from getting it before was transferred so they finally got me. I am writing this by lantern light so it won’t be long.
I went to L.A. over the weekend and had a swell time. I met about 4 women and stayed at one’s house over nite—well from 6 till 11 in the morning. Ha. Her family treated me swell. I got the slip for your last box this evening and I’ll get it tomorrow. The ones’ I forgot to mention were swell and tell dad the bucks came in handy. I paid for my laundry with it. Well I gotta go to bed,
Love,
Joe

July 29, 1943
Dear Mother,
I am a bad boy, we just returned from a three week maneuver, we slept for three weeks in the field in tents. Well, I have received all the boxes and pictures and they were sure swell-(both).
I went to L.A. last weekend and a friend of mine took some [illegible] color pictures of my buddy and I. They won’t be ready for about five weeks, though, they have to go to New York to be developed. There is a rumor going around that we are getting a 15 day furlough with 2 days traveling time around Sept. 1. Don’t count on it, just hope for it.
We are going out next week so don’t expect a letter for about a week and a half. The mail service is bad when we are in the field. Over.
I get off of mess duty tomorrow. Boy has it been hell getting up at 4 and working till around 6:30.
My buddy since Joe & Stine were transferred is Joe [Parvich or Parish]. Joe is from North Carolina and we are on mess duty together. He is a good looking guy about my size and I think he is 18 years old. We go out together all the time. Well last weekend we were ready to start home when a car pulled up and they ask us if we want a lift. We were going toward Long Beach talking to the lady in the car when we passed a convertible. They lady asked them to take us along. They said ok but we would have to come along home till about 7:30. We went along and met the family and then had a chicken supper. We picked up another girl at the house, a cousin of theirs. Two of the girls stopped at a dance in Long Beach and the other two brought us 86 miles back to Camp. We had a swell time, made a date for next weekend and got back to camp. Not bad luck. Well Love Joe.

P.S. I’ll start again because I didn’t see this space before. I get paid for the first time Friday since I got here from home. Then I’ll be out of debt again, I hope. Tell everyone hello. I just saw a good looking girl so I will write soon. Love, Joe xxxooo

Letter
Feb. 11, 1942
New River, N.C.
Dear Mother and All, It is about 8 o’clock and I am lying on my sack resting my sore dogs. We went on a 27-mile hike yesterday and I have blisters on both feet. The athletics [sic] feet came back a little and that is why. Send me some envelopes, please. I am about out, and capital is running low, since I paid all my debts. I could also use some more socks. We are really starting to work hard now and we soon begin night work.
Well I am sorry I didn’t write. I guess I am just a bad boy. I went out on liberty Sat. and they told me about the call on Mon. Yes, you can send me some books and tell Aunt Maudie I really enjoyed the one she sent me. I read it that same night waiting to go on guard duty. The writing at the bottom was done by my buddy who sleeps next to me. His name is Stine* and he is a swell fellow. He threw a knife into my toes yesterday…accidentally of course. It just scratched it a little. The guy on the other side of me sends his love. His name is Ed. All of the other guys are out now so I haven’t been bothered much but I will have to sign off now. Love and kisses, Joe. Happy Valentine.
P.S. Please send some of those good cookies, Mrs. Hines. (signed Preston Stine, Joe’s friend.)
