Fouts, Leslie "Les" Jacob (1901-1979)
Les Fouts, an MMA cadet, wearing his school's basketball team uniform and holding a basketball with the words, "MMA 1923" written on it.
Leslie “Les” Fouts was a cadet at Massanutten Academy from 1922-1924. He later returned to the Academy and is remembered for having served on the faculty there as a coach for the academy's swim and football teams from 1928-1942.
Les Fouts was born in Chicago and grew up in South Haven, Van Buren County, Michigan. In 1910, he was the oldest of five children born to Charles O. (1870-1941) and Louise C. (Mellondorf) (1874-1932) Fouts. His father was a barber.
He went to L.C. Mohr High School in South Haven, Michigan, for two years. Next, Les attended Massanutten Academy from 1922 to 1924. During the summer of 1923, Les married a girl from his hometown high school in Michigan, Mary Meader. At the time, Les’ occupation was “student”. Mary was a year behind him in school and they married in neighboring Berrien County. This marriage did not last.
Les married Bertha Ely (1909-1993) in Lake County, Indiana, in June 1928. She was born in Michigan to Peter Franklyn (1877-1927) and Phebe Elvira (Woodruff) (1885-1952) Ely. Les and Bertha were married more than 50 years before Les died.
Both the 1930 and 1940 censuses found the family living in Woodstock where Les worked at Massanutten Academy as an athletic coach and instructor. He and Bertha had two children, Lois and Leslie J. Fouts, Jr. Both of their children were born in Michigan.
The family later moved to Georgia where, by 1950, Les worked as a teacher and coach for the private school, Woodward Academy, in Atlanta. His wife had a part-time job managing a book store.
When Les died many years later, he was a retired football and swimming coach for Woodward Academy. Both he and his wife are buried in Fulton County, Georgia.

A riding class on a jaunt through the woods
Massanutten Academy (Woodstock Va)
Little was recorded about horse-back riding at Massanutten Academy in 1940. Apparently most of it was done at Camp Lupton, the academy’s recreation center and maneuver grounds along the Shenandoah River east of town.
In addition to camping facilities, large lodges, and ample swimming, the grounds offered equestrian trails that the cadets used on a regular basis. Riding classes were also offered and numerous students took advantage of the opportunity to become successful horseman.
In conjunction with the school’s R.O.T.C. program, much of this was done to prepare students to use the horse in armed conflict, something that seems obsolete when compared to the mechanized state of warfare at the time.
Camp Lupton would continue to serve as Massanutten Academy’s outdoor facility until late in the 20th century when the camp was closed. In 2013 it was donated to the Commonwealth of Virginia and is slated to become a state park.

Mt. Zion's minister Rev. W.H. Polk is pictured on the far right in the middle row with glasses and a bow tie.
Preston Scott is on the far left wearing makeup and holding a tambourine. He played the character “Snowball” in the 1921 production.
Lewis McAfee is shown in the back row, third from right holding a stringed instrument.
Elsie Pye is pictured in the center of the photograph with her head turned.
Charles Butcher is pictured seated in the first row, second from left. He played “Bones” in the 1921 production.
The Shenandoah Herald article reporting the production also notes Theodore Tolliver played “Shine Charlie” and Andrew McAfee played “Slim.” Most likely they are in this photograph, but it is uncertain which subjects they are.
The other individuals are unidentified.

Airplane Visit
Shenandoah County Fair (Va)
Terrill, Frank J.
Woodstock Post Office (Va)
Calvert, W.M.
In October of 1913 Frank J. Terrill brought his Curtis Biplane to the Shenandoah County Fairgrounds as part of the fair’s festivities.
This is the first recorded time an airplane passed through Shenandoah County and would have been most local’s first opportunities to see a flying machine.
The plane’s arrival brought an excited crowd to the fairground. The Woodstock post office added to the excitement by arranging to have Terrill fly mail from Woodstock to Mt. Jackson as one of the first national air mail deliveries. On October 17th Post Master W.M. Calvert and Terrill flew several pieces of mail from the Fairgrounds and dropped them near the post office to the delight of most locals.
Despite his success in Shenandoah County, Frank Terrill’s days as a pilot were numbered. The dangers associated with early planes soon caught up with him and he was killed at a county fair in Chesterfield, South Carolina on November 13, 1914.
However, locals would remain enamored with the airplane. As its use expanded, plane culture would become a permanent part of Shenandoah County. Among other things a fighter jet would be displayed at Woodstock’s town park when it opened in the 1960s, helicopter rides would be offered at the county fair during the late 20th and early 21st century, and airplane watching became a popular local pastime that continues to this day.
These materials highlight Terrill's early flight and include a photograph of Terrill at the fairgrounds, an envelope from the flight, and Frank's business card.
