Swartz, Virginia Ruth Hornsby (1911-1989)
Zirkle, Ida Sue (Swartz)
Photograph of James Eldred Swartz with his wife, Virginia Ruth (Hornsby) and his young daughter, Ida Sue.
J. Eldred Swartz was the son of Charles Franklin and Ida Belle (Coffman) Swartz from the southern end of Shenandoah County. He graduated from William and Mary College in Williamsburg, Virginia.
He is most remembered for his years as a teacher and principal for the Shenandoah County Public Schools, mostly in Mt. Jackson.
His wife was Virginia Ruth (Hornsby) Swartz, the daughter of LeRoy Alphonse (1869-1946) and Sudie (Shields) (1881-1948) Hornsby, from Hornsbyville, York County, Virginia. Like her husband, she graduated from William and Mary College.
When they married in November 1940, J. Eldred was the Principal of Triplett Agricultural High School in Mt. Jackson and Ruth was an instructor at Lane High School in Charlottesville. Before that, she had been a member of the faculty for several years at Poquoson High School near Newport News, Virginia.
When J. Eldred Swartz registered for the WWII draft in 1942, his telephone number was “18” on the Mt. Jackson exchange.
Their daughter, Ida Sue Swartz, was born in Newport News. She grew up to be a teacher in Mt. Jackson and married Warren Eugene Zirkle in February 1968 in Williamsburg. He was the son of William Monroe and Fern Frances (Golladay) Zirkle.
At the time of their marriage, he worked as a staff assistant for the telephone company. Sue and Warren Zirkle spent over four decades together until they divorced in 2011.

Wine, Naomi Zirkle (1917-2020)
Wine, Mary Sue
Portrait of Jesse C. Wine, his daughter, Mary Sue, and his wife Naomi (Zirkle) Wine.
Jesse Wine was born in Forestville, son of the late Jacob David Wine and Kitty Sipe Huffman Wine.
Mr. Wine worked for the army during World War II at Fort Belvoir as manager of the tailor shop and dry cleaners. He entered the insurance business in 1945 and worked in Alexandria, Winchester, Mt. Jackson, and Woodstock, where he retired in 1975 from Interstate Life and Accident Insurance Co. after 30 years of service.
In September 1943, while he was still at Ft. Belvoir, he married Naomi Zirkle, daughter of Joseph H. Zirkle and Mary (Hupp) Zirkle of New Market. They had a daughter, Mary Sue (Wine) France. The couple enjoyed 72 years together before Mr. Wine's death in 2016. Both lived to be 100 years old.
He was a member of the Woodstock United Methodist Church where he was a treasurer for 15 years. For 70 years he was member of a Masonic Lodge including Mt. Jackson Masonic Lodge No. 103, Shenandoah Royal Arch Chapter #17 Edinburg, Alexandria Scottish Rite 32°, Acca Temple Shrine in Richmond, Blue Ridge Shrine Club, and the Shenandoah Valley Scottish Rite Club.
In 1966, Jesse Wine became a charter member of the Woodstock Rescue Squad, where he drove an ambulance for 10 years and served as treasurer for 16 years. He had a vineyard and was a professional grape pruner going to as many as 60 places per year from Harrisonburg to Winchester. He was also a cane maker and since 1932 has handcrafted more than 1500 Dogwood canes, which he has shared with his many friends and handicapped persons.
His wife, Naomi, was also active in the community. She loved people and enjoyed hosting them in her home. Strangers at church became life long friends after being invited to dinner numerous times. She was the supreme homemaker and worked long hours tending to her garden and preserving the food from it. Her talent in baking led to a career as a professional cake maker for over a decade. Even at the age of 98 she was baking bread to give to her neighbors.

Painting of "Locust Vale"
Houses - Virginia - Shenandoah County
Photograph of a painting done in 1880 by Julia Kagey of Locust Vale Farm. The farm was located southwest of the Shenandoah Caverns Exit of I-81, in the Rude's Hill area. John Henry Neff purchased 470 acres of land in 1750. It was divided among his children in 1786. When the painting was done, the farm was owned by John Henry Kagey. The home was demolished in 1885. Oral history says a current brick house replaced it. The original painting is owned by L. Harold Zirkle.
