Title

Ann "Nance" Clower Adkerson

Subject

Adkerson, Ann "Nance" Clower (1888-1974)

Description

Portrait of Anna Winfield Clower Adkerson wearing a large hat.

She was the daughter of James Henry (unknown-1924) and Antoinette Dubois (Winfield) (1853-1937) Clower. She lived in Woodstock. As a young woman, she taught music with her mother and, later, became a saleslady in an antiques store. She still lived in the family home on N. Main Street with two of her brothers in the 1940 census.

She married late in life, sometime after 1942, and had no children. Her husband was Joseph Carson Adkerson (1892-1985), a mining engineer originally from Lynchburg. His parents were Alonzo Thomas and Lizzie (Carson) Adkerson. He had an impressive career, serving as the manager and engineer of Powell’s Fort Manganese Mines near Woodstock and as the President of the American Manganese Production Association in Washington D.C.
