Southern Kitchen

Established in 1955, Southern Kitchen is probably New Markets most iconic restaurants. The restaurant prides itself on serving delicious meals, ranging from fried chicken to peanut soup, with 1950s flair.

Southern Kitchen has an upstairs dining room, lunch counter, and downstairs banquet room. It can seat over 150 people and is regularly filled with locals and visitors looking for a good meal. The social atmosphere facilitates gatherings of individuals who share stories, memories, and gossip on a regular basis.

This institution was originally a family affair. The founders, Lloyd and Ruby Newland operated the restaurant for several decades. In 2005 they sold it to their son and daughter-in-law, Randy and Rebecca Newland who operated Southern Kitchen until 2019 when it was sold to Jimmy Shifflett.
