We won in the last half of the 11th. We were behind in the last of the 9th the short stop came up with two out and two on the count was 2 strikes, 1 ball and hit a home run. Buddy sent me a picture of his girl in Hollywood and I have seen her in movies once or twice. It’s certainly possible that Buddy met and took out a movie star. I have known several guys that spent weekend in Hollywood with the stars and their families. One of the guys in C. Co used to go to Alexia Smith’s home quite a lot. Do you remember the picture of me with the hula girl on my lap I had [taken] in L.A.? She was Johnnie Wisemuller’s girl (the guy that plays Tarzan) but I didn’t think that important. I have met some of the Stars of the male sex but never dated any of the opposite sex. I would rather be pursued than to pursue. Ha. I have met Bob Crosby (Bing’s brother), Betty Hutton, and Moss Hart the playwright who wrote The Man who Came to Dinner but I just haven’t been bragging about it. Say we are putting on a show at our theater tonight called Frisco Follies. I’m doing a black face act in this one, let you know how it comes off. Joseph Martin Hines was born in Toms Brook Virginia on December 1, 1923. His parents were Mary Thelma Borden and Duval “Du” Hines. Duval ran a general store in Toms Brook. Joseph Hines attended Toms Brook High School and graduated in 1941. He was a member of the school band, in which he played the clarinet, and of St. Peters Lutheran Church where he sand in the choir. In 1941 he enlisted in the United States Marine Corps. He trained at Parris Island in South Carolina in 1942. Later that year he was transferred to San Diego and later Hawaii. In 1944 he was part of the invasion force that landed at Iwo Jima. After the war he lived in Arlington Virginia and married Ruby Beaver. He died in 1969. Hines Toms Brook Virginia Letter: Dear Mother, Well I really have the worse luck. Here I’m on tour with a swell show one day & in the hospital with a broken foot the next. Now don’t get excited it isn’t bad at all just one bone my 5th metarsal! I walk on it with a cast and walking iron. We were playing basketball between shows and my shoe came off. I stepped on it that ended my part of the game. I’m in a hospital near camp recovering and having a vacation. My picture will probably be in the paper with some crazy story and telling about the show. They are still showing and doing rather well without me. I sure hope they have lots of luck. Don’t worry about me. I’ll be as good as ever and probably better off. I will send the cards tomorrow. I didn’t get a chance before because I was with the show for 20 shows and have been here about a week. I’m near the camp and the boys come in often and I get mail about twice a week and the mail gets out about that often. A bunch of guys sat in the rain last nite for two hrs. last nite to see it, the stage was covered so we didn’t get very wet. We aren’t using Lumb & Abner now, we may later, we have enough numbers to last 3 hrs. I like the I.D. Bracelet fine and everything else. I got 3 boxes from you all, Jones said there was one thing wrong with the box of cookies—there wasn’t enough, Ha. I got boxes from Mama’s [Hottle’s, father’s] “Monnee” and a church thing. Tell Ma. I like the pipe & tobacco swell and am using it now. Mother you said something about Margaret in one of your letters, you said “I guess you know about it now”—well I don’t but would like to very much. What’s the dope? I hear from her still and she writes the same (still like a page from “True Romance”) so I want to know what she has done now. Say Dad is Sue Vance really very cute?
