Mary was the 3rd daughter of Patrick and Belle (Hockman) Kelley, from Edinburg. She married William Daniel Barton (1858-1936), in 1884. He was a farmer and part-time clerk in stores in Woodstock and Edinburg. Mary died unexpectedly from complications of pneumonia. She is buried in Cedarwood Cemetery, Edinburg. A short biography is included there that, in part, says this: "Called "Turn" by her family, Mary got her nickname from the popular and flamboyant General Turner Ashby, Stonewall Jackson's most important Calvary commander during the 1862 "Valley Campaign". General Ashby was brought to the Kelley home for a visit by Mary's father, Patrick, who served in the 12th Virginia Cavalry under Generals Jackson and Ashby, when Mary was an infant. Elmer lived in the Edinburg area and farmed as well as worked as a carpenter. Helen Virginia Fry, was his first-born child. This photograph was likely taken before Helen’s younger brother, Paul M. Fry, was born. Helen married Paul Henry Miller (1908-1967). They had a son together, Jerry Paul Miller (1951-2015), and they remained in the Edinburg area all their lives. In 1930, Bernard worked as an electrician and lived in the Lee District with his widowed father, sisters, and two teenaged nephews. Soon after, Bernard married Katharine Frances (Sowers) (1896-1959) Getz. Her parents were Clayton Kile (1865-1939) and Laura (Bushong) (1866-1948) Sowers. In 1940, the census found the couple with two sons, Gene Kile Getz (1932-1982) and Grayson Sowers Getz (1935- ). The family lived on Route 11 in the Ashby District of Shenandoah County and Bernard was still an electrician. When he registered for the WWII draft, Bernard lived with his wife in Mount Jackson where he was “self-employed”. The draft card noted he had a “defective arm and hand”. He was described as being 5’11” tall and 200 pounds. Both Bernard and his wife are buried in Forestville. Court Street in Woodstock after several years of working in the area as a travelling photographer. Between that time, and the time his grandson James Morrison closed the studio in 1988, the Morrison family captured thousands of portraits, landscapes, and buildings on film and glass negatives. In 1999 the Shenandoah County Historical Society acquired over 31,000 of these negatives from the estate of local collector Charles D. Bauserman. Volunteers from the historical society worked over the next several decades to house, number, and scan each image. This effort resulted in over two tons of Morrison plates and negatives being processed and digitized. This collection contains those digitized versions of these photographs. Through a partnership between the historical society and the Shenandoah County Library's Truban Archives access to a growing number of these images is available to the public. Current projections indicate the full collection will be available for viewing sometime in 2028. This collection does contain some images of a sexual and/or graphic nature that some viewers may find inappropriate.
