Wrightson Samuel Tongue was a Methodist Minister, born in Kingston, New York. His parents were N.M. Charles Tongue and Lucy (Felter) Tongue. While a young minister, he met and married Elizabeth Mae Modisher in Salem, Ohio, in June 1940. She was from Sharpsburg Pennsylvania, the daughter of James M. and Anna (Lee) Modisher. When he registered for the WWII draft in October 1940, W.S. and his wife lived in Meadville, PA, where his employer was listed as the Methodist Church in Eureka, Erie, Pennsylvania. The 1941 yearbook for Allegheny College in Meadville, Pennsylvania, included him as a student. At least one of their older children, son James Melvin, was born in New Market, Shenandoah County, Virginia. City Directories from 1953 and 1954 show W.S. Tongue working as a “Pastor” in the Norfolk area. Later City Directories found him in Lynchburg, usually at the address: 1503 Sherbrooke Drive. He and his wife had many children together. Mentioned in his May 2013 obituary were four sons: W.S. Jr., James Melvin, William Lee, and Donald Vincent, and four daughters: Judy, Annette, Donna and Sharon. The name, "Rev. W.S. Tongue", the town, "Edinburg", and the date, "7/7/4?" are written on the glass plate of this image. Heishman Subject The topic of the resource Heishman, Perry Twyman (1926-1989) United States Civil Air Patrol Description An account of the resource Portrait photograph of Perry T. Heishman as a young man. He is wearing a uniform that indicates he was part of the Civilian Air Patrol during the Second World War, rising to the rank of Second Lieutenant and Commander of the Shenandoah County unit. Perry was born in Edinburg, Virginia, to Perry A. and Jessie (Newland) Heishman. The family farmed in the “Massanutten Mountain” area of the Madison District in 1930 and in the Johnston District in 1940. He had at least two older brothers, Lester and William. Perry graduated from Edinburg High School. Soon after, he enlisted in the U.S. Air Force and spent his career in the military where he was posted to bases both in the country and overseas. When he died, his obituary in the Honolulu newspaper noted he was a retired flight engineer with the U.S. Air Force at Hickam Air Force Base near Pearl Harbor. He married Jeannie Rose (Chareau) Heishman who was born in Algiers, and was French. It is likely they met during Perry's overseas WWII service. The couple raised two children together, Charles and Louise. The marriage did not last and Perry moved to Mississippi. At the end of his life, he was still there when he was struck and killed by an automobile while walking along a busy road. His is buried in Honolulu, Hawaii. Pictured are (l to r): his wife Stella (Argeris) Pappas, his oldest daughter, Evanthia "Eva" Pappas, and George Pappas. George Pappas was the son of Konstantine and Eleni Kotsikakis and was from Evrytanias, Greece, a region of mountains, rivers, and green hills in central Greece. In the 1930 census, George Pappas was one of five Greek men living in Woodstock, Virginia, where they were listed as partners in a restaurant. One of the partners, Pete Blentson, married Rena Pappas, who was George’s sister. George was not yet a US citizen in this record. He married Stella Argeris (born circa 1915) in Chryssou, Greece. He visited when he could. Their oldest daughter, Eva, was born in Marathia, Greece, around 1938. In October 1940, George was listed on the WWII draft registration card for James Kotsianas, as the person who would always know where Kotsianas was. George’s residence was still Woodstock. In February 1942, George registered for the WWII draft himself. His card noted he lived in Pulaski, Virginia, was 44 years old, born in Marathia, Greece (a village in the western part of Evrytania) and was “self-employed”. His emergency contact was John Fuseki. George was described as being 5’4” tall and 140 pounds. George’s wife, Stella and his oldest daughter, Evanthia (Eva), arrived in New York from Piraeus, Greece, aboard the S.S. Marine Carp, on December 1, 1947. The journey by sea took about 2 weeks. Eva was only 10 years old but had a U.S. passport issued in Athens. Her mother travelled with her and was a Greek citizen. Her father, Elias Argeris was left behind in Chryssou, Greece. Pulaski was their final destination. In the 1950 census, the family lived in Pulaski, Virginia, where they raised two daughters: Eva, born ca 1938 in Greece; and Helen Rena Pappas, born ca 1950 in Virginia. He operated a restaurant in Pulaski until his death years later. Stella continued to operate it after he died. Fravel wearing his U.S. Army uniform. Alva was born in Edinburg to Jacob Marvin (1895-1954) and Katherine (Clark) (1897-1983) Fravel. As a baby, he lived with his parents on his paternal grandparents’ farm on Calvary Road in the Stonewall District of the county. Ten years later, the family had moved to Edinburg and lived with his maternal grandparents where his father worked as a salesman in a radio shop and his grandfather was a Blacksmith. After high school, Alva went to Washington, D.C. where he got a job with J.C. Harding & Company, an electric sales and service company located on 10th Street, N.W. When he registered for the WWII draft in 1942, Alva lived on Harvard St., N.W. Two years later, he enlisted in the military at Camp Meade, Maryland, where the record noted he had experience as “Skilled linemen and servicemen, telegraph, telephone, and power”. In 1946, he married Vera Dare Stocks (1922-2009) in Washington, D.C. Vera was born in Grifton, North Carolina. She had moved to Washington D.C. before the war to work for the U.S. Government. When they married, Alva was employed by C&P Telephone Company, where he stayed for 45 years. After their daughter, JoAnne, was born, they moved to Arlington, VA. Vera worked in the private sector until returning to the U.S. Government in the 1960's as an auditor until she retired in 1987. Court Street in Woodstock after several years of working in the area as a travelling photographer. Between that time, and the time his grandson James Morrison closed the studio in 1988, the Morrison family captured thousands of portraits, landscapes, and buildings on film and glass negatives. In 1999 the Shenandoah County Historical Society acquired over 31,000 of these negatives from the estate of local collector Charles D. Bauserman. Volunteers from the historical society worked over the next several decades to house, number, and scan each image. This effort resulted in over two tons of Morrison plates and negatives being processed and digitized. This collection contains those digitized versions of these photographs. Through a partnership between the historical society and the Shenandoah County Library's Truban Archives access to a growing number of these images is available to the public. Current projections indicate the full collection will be available for viewing sometime in 2028. This collection does contain some images of a sexual and/or graphic nature that some viewers may find inappropriate. Douglas Orndorff grew up in Woodstock, the oldest child of Clarence Lemuel and Vesta (Schaeffer) Orndorff. In 1920, the family lived in Woodstock where Douglas’ father worked as a machinist at the creamery. Douglas had four younger siblings at that time. He married 21-year old Stella Virginia Combs in April 1938 when he worked as a Drug clerk. She was from Rockingham County and lived in Broadway. Five years later, Douglas enlisted in the Army and became part of the 78th Replacement Battalion, 455th Replacement Company. His rank was “T-4”. He served from June 1943 to November 1945. Douglas and Stella divorced a couple of years after he got out of the military. Less than a year later, he married his second wife, Margret Vernell Webber Hamner (1908-1977) in Harrisonburg, where they both lived. When they married, Douglas was an apprentice embalmer while Margret worked as the manager of the “Smart & Thrifty” store. The 1950 census found the couple living on N. Garfield Street in Arlington where Douglas worked as a mortician in a funeral home. The couple had an 11-year old son, Frank F. Orndorff. Eventually, they moved back to Woodstock, where Douglas died in 1967. He and Margret are both buried in Lynchburg, where she was born.
