This photograph was taken when the dam was flooded in 1910. During that flood, the dam was dynamitedon June 19, 1910. This photograph was taken during the aftermath with the damaged section visible in the bottom, center of the photograph. This dam was originally the site of Rush's Mill before being purchased by J.I. Triplett in 1873. Triplett eventually converted the site into a hydroelectric dam which was destroyed in the 1910 flood and later rebuilt. Today, it is commonly called Burnshire Dam. The first floor was used for classrooms and the second floor contained an auditorium for community and school events. This design was popular in the area and most county schools were built in this style. The school was established in 1876. It was one of the first schools in Shenandoah County to offer high school courses and advanced learning opportunities. Court Street in Woodstock after several years of working in the area as a travelling photographer. Volunteers from the historical society worked over the next several decades to house, number, and scan each image. Through a partnership between the historical society and the Shenandoah County Library's Truban Archives access to a growing number of these images is available to the public. The land for the current building was purchased in 1922. Construction was completed in 1931 at a cost of $52,000 dollars. Made of rough cut stone, the building is unique among the Woodstock Churches. The Woodstock Christian Church merged with the Fairview Christian Church west of Woodstock, in 1950. The church also cooperated closely with the Edinburg Christian Church and shared a minister with that congregation until 2002. In this photograph, the name of the pastor, "J. Mitchell Hote", is written on the image along with the name of the church. Court Street in Woodstock after several years of working in the area as a travelling photographer. Between that time, and the time his grandson James Morrison closed the studio in 1988, the Morrison family captured thousands of portraits, landscapes, and buildings on film and glass negatives. In 1999 the Shenandoah County Historical Society acquired over 31,000 of these negatives from the estate of local collector Charles D. Bauserman. Volunteers from the historical society worked over the next several decades to house, number, and scan each image. This effort resulted in over two tons of Morrison plates and negatives being processed and digitized. This collection contains those digitized versions of these photographs. Through a partnership between the historical society and the Shenandoah County Library's Truban Archives access to a growing number of these images is available to the public. Current projections indicate the full collection will be available for viewing sometime in 2028. This collection does contain some images of a sexual and/or graphic nature that some viewers may find inappropriate. The dam is locally known as Burnshire Dam. The river around it appears to be in flood stage. Originally, this site was home to Rush's Mill. In 1873 it was purchased by J.I. Triplett. In 1892 he converted the mill dam into "Triplett's Dam" to produce hydoelectric power. The concrete dam pictured was constructed in 1921 after an earlier dam was destroyed in a flood.
