Earl enlisted in the U.S. Army as a private in June 1945, near the end of WWII. Earl was a lifelong Edinburg area resident, the son of Earl E. (1891-1952) and Lena Virginia (Grandstaff) (1896-1960) Wolverton. He had an older sister, Jean L. Wolverton. His father was a carpenter and Earl Jr. worked with him growing up and after his military service. When he married Betty Lou Irwin, in 1948, his occupation was “carpenter’s helper”. Betty Lou (Irwin) Wolverton was the daughter of Brooks Adolph Irwin, Sr. (1895-1967) and Elizabeth Maude (Kirby) (1908-1987) Irwin. She was just 16 years old when she married. The 1950 census found the couple with a 1-year old son, Charles Daniel. The young family was living with his parents and sister in rural Edinburg. His occupation in this record was “farmer”. Earl and his wife had at least two additional children in the years they were together: Sandra Kay and Pamela Sue Wolverton. The medal on his chest indicates he was a marksman. The name, "Earl Wolverton", is written on the glass plate. Title A name given to the resource Morrison Studio Collection Subject The topic of the resource Morrison, Hugh Jr. (1871-1950) Morrison, Louis Morrison, James Description An account of the resource In 1899 Hugh Morrison Jr. opened a photograph studio on W. Court Street in Woodstock after several years of working in the area as a travelling photographer. Between that time, and the time his grandson James Morrison closed the studio in 1988, the Morrison family captured thousands of portraits, landscapes, and buildings on film and glass negatives. In 1999 the Shenandoah County Historical Society acquired over 31,000 of these negatives from the estate of local collector Charles D. Bauserman. Volunteers from the historical society worked over the next several decades to house, number, and scan each image. This effort resulted in over two tons of Morrison plates and negatives being processed and digitized. This collection contains those digitized versions of these photographs. Through a partnership between the historical society and the Shenandoah County Library's Truban Archives access to a growing number of these images is available to the public. Current projections indicate the full collection will be available for viewing sometime in 2028. This collection does contain some images of a sexual and/or graphic nature that some viewers may find inappropriate. Markley wearing his U.S. Army uniform and seated beside his wife, Hilda (Barb) Markley and son, Jackie Markley. Elmer served in the United States Army during World War II. He then worked as an engineer in the temperature department at Avtex in Front Royal retiring in 1980. He is most remembered as being a master sawyer and operating the sawmill west of Columbia Furnace in Johnstown for many years. His wife, Hilda, was born in Basye, one of several children born to William H. and Vinnie Victoria (Funkhouser) Barb. His son, Jackie, was born in Harrisonburg and graduated from Central High School in 1961. He married his high school sweetheart a year later, Luella A. Sibert, and raised three children. Jackie worked for the FBI in Washington, DC, the Edinburg Aileen for 16 years, as a hardware salesman for R.D. McKee and opened his own business later. Throughout his life, Jackie worked with his father and brother in a family business named M&M Lumber Company. The name, "Elmer Marseley", appears to be written on the glass plate of this image. He retired after 30+ years from the Washington Gas Company, where he was a Supervisor of Customer Service, and from the US Army Reserves after years of dedicated service. He was also a member of the Annandale Methodist Church in Fairfax County, Virginia. He lived in Springfield, Virginia, when he died.
