Court Street in Woodstock after several years of working in the area as a travelling photographer. When Harold registered for the WWII draft in 1942, he worked for Gaylon Zirkle in Mt. Jackson. After his military service, he married Mae Rebecca (Olinger) Henry in 1948. At that time, Harold was a plumber (like his father) and his new wife worked for the Bluebell Co. At first, they lived with her parents in the Lee District of Shenandoah County. Bushong Subject The topic of the resource Bushong, Gilbert Franklin (1916-2011) Description An account of the resource Portrait photograph of Gilbert Franklin Bushong as a young man wearing a suit and tie. He was one of four sons of Emery Franklin (1889-1949) and Elizabeth “Lizzie” Sarah (Wisman) (1889-1972) Bushong. Gilbert and his brothers grew up on a farm west of Woodstock on Fairview Road. He was a lifelong resident of Woodstock. In 1921, Gilbert and his older brother, Lee, survived a harrowing 250-foot fall over a precipice across the river from the Triplett power plant. It occurred when the horse their father was using to pull a wagon up a mountain was spooked by something. The horse broke away and ran over the cliff with the wagon and boys attached. The two boys were found badly bruised but alive at the foot of the cliff near the river. They had to be rescued by boat. The newspaper article described the event as “one of the most remarkable escapes in the history of the mountains”. Clinedinst Subject The topic of the resource Clinedinst, Russell George "Bud" (1918-1945) Soldiers - United States - Virginia - Shenandoah County Description An account of the resource Portrait photograph of Russell George "Bud" Clinedinst in his U.S. Army uniform. He was the son of Russell George and Retta Wise (Fultz) Clinedinst, a farming couple in the Edinburg area. When he registered for the WWII draft in 1940, Russell lived in Edinburg and worked for C.M. Shannon in Mt. Jackson. His mother was listed as his emergency contact and he was described as being 5'8" tall and weighing 163 pounds. He enlisted in the Army in March 1944 and trained in Fort Meade, Maryland. He was a Private when he was sent overseas. He was killed in action at the Battle of the Bulge on January 14, 1945. He is buried in the Luxembourg American Cemetery in Hamm, Luxembourg. Court Street in Woodstock after several years of working in the area as a travelling photographer. Between that time, and the time his grandson James Morrison closed the studio in 1988, the Morrison family captured thousands of portraits, landscapes, and buildings on film and glass negatives. In 1999 the Shenandoah County Historical Society acquired over 31,000 of these negatives from the estate of local collector Charles D. Bauserman. Volunteers from the historical society worked over the next several decades to house, number, and scan each image. This effort resulted in over two tons of Morrison plates and negatives being processed and digitized. This collection contains those digitized versions of these photographs. Through a partnership between the historical society and the Shenandoah County Library's Truban Archives access to a growing number of these images is available to the public. Current projections indicate the full collection will be available for viewing sometime in 2028.
