His father was a well-known schoolteacher in Fort Valley. In September 1930, Ray married Edna Virginia (Hoover) Tamkin. Ray worked as a button maker at the time of their marriage. The couple raised their children, a son, Lewis Donald "Don"Tamkin, and a daughter, Reba Marie (Tamkin) Smith, at 201 S. Massanutten Street in Strasburg. The family attended Strasburg Methodist Church and were active in the community. The Northern Virginia Daily Newspaper mentioned them repeatedly as being involved in church or community activities throughout their lives together. Title A name given to the resource Morrison Studio Collection Subject The topic of the resource Morrison, Hugh Jr. (1871-1950) Morrison, Louis Morrison, James Description An account of the resource In 1899 Hugh Morrison Jr. opened a photograph studio on W. Court Street in Woodstock after several years of working in the area as a travelling photographer. Between that time, and the time his grandson James Morrison closed the studio in 1988, the Morrison family captured thousands of portraits, landscapes, and buildings on film and glass negatives. In 1999 the Shenandoah County Historical Society acquired over 31,000 of these negatives from the estate of local collector Charles D. Bauserman. Volunteers from the historical society worked over the next several decades to house, number, and scan each image. This effort resulted in over two tons of Morrison plates and negatives being processed and digitized. This collection contains those digitized versions of these photographs. Through a partnership between the historical society and the Shenandoah County Library's Truban Archives access to a growing number of these images is available to the public. Current projections indicate the full collection will be available for viewing sometime in 2028. This collection does contain some images of a sexual and/or graphic nature that some viewers may find inappropriate. She was the daughter of Robert Johnston Benchoff, headmaster of Massanutten Military Academy, and Jean (Sine) Benchoff. She graduated from Central High School, Woodstock, Va., and received both a B.M. and an M.M. from the Peabody Institute of Johns Hopkins University, Baltimore, Md. An image similar to these two was used in the 1967 Central High School yearbook because Gretchen, as a Senior, won the DAR Good Citizenship Award that year. From 1974-2002, Gretchen was on the college faculty, the preparatory faculty and was chair of the Music Theory Department at Peabody Institute of Johns Hopkins University. From 1981-2005, she was employed by Dunbar Armored Inc., in Hunt Valley, Md., as vice president of Human Resources. At the end of her career, she worked part-time in a human resource capacity at Towson Pharmacy, Towson, Md. Gretchen never married and was buried in Woodstock, Virginia.
