Lewis McAfee was born in Shenandoah County to Arthur and Minnie McAfee. He grew up on Spring Street in Woodstock. His father was a barber and, in 1910, had his own shop. By 1920, however, his father had died. Lewis lived with his widowed mother and siblings and worked as a general laborer. Lewis married Elsie F. (Pye) (1909-1994) in Woodstock in October 1926. She was 16 years old. He was a few years older and worked as a cook. They soon moved in with Elsie’s mother on High Street. In 1930, Lewis was a “cleaner” and had his own shop. Their oldest daughter, Francine, was there too. Sometime after 1935, Elsie and Lewis moved to Washington D.C. In the 1940 census, the couple had three young daughters. A lodger, Bernard Smith, was also there. When Lewis registered for the WWII draft in 1942, he and Elsie lived on 14th Street in D.C. Lewis was “Head Janitor” of the building they lived in. He was described as being 5’2” and 140 pounds. In the 1950 census, little had changed except that Elsie was also working as a janitor. Lewis died in Washington D.C., and was buried in Woodstock. Elsie died many years later, also in Washington D.C. Evelyn was born in Washington D.C., the daughter of Thomas H. and Bessie (Miller) Wilkinson. Her mother was from Woodstock, and, at some point, Evelyn went back there to live. She made the honor roll as a Sophomore and Junior at Woodstock High School. The 1920 census found her living on Muhlenberg Street with her grandfather, John B. Miller, and her aunt, Bernice. Evelyn never married and remained at the home on Muhlenberg Street with her aunt for decades. In 1930, she worked as a seamstress in a factory. In 1940, she was a clerk at the Cora Miller Memorial Hospital in Woodstock. In 1950, she was a bookkeeper at Bowman’s. Her death certificate, years later, stated she was a retired teacher whose usual residence was on North Street, Woodstock. About Fred Ashby Mantz, Jr.: Fred graduated from Woodstock High School in 1954 and enlisted in the Army soon after. He finished basic training at Camp Gordon, Georgia, and spent 2-1/2 years in Japan with the Signal Corps. He was discharged in 1957 and worked for Western Union in Washington, D.C. He married Lois Mae See (1937-2022) in November 1959, in Switzerland, before moving to Africa where Lois worked for the Foreign Service. Later, they returned to the United States and lived in Fredericksburg, Virginia, for many years. The couple had two sons together. About Doris Jean (Mantz) Crum: Doris Mantz married Joseph E. Crum (1932-2014) in 1952. He was from Ohio. The couple had four sons and two daughters together. Doris and her family lived in Florida for years when the children were young. Northern Virginia newspaper articles from the early 1960s mentioned them each time they came back to Woodstock for a visit with relatives. Later in her life, Doris lived in Van West County, Ohio. Court Street in Woodstock after several years of working in the area as a travelling photographer. Between that time, and the time his grandson James Morrison closed the studio in 1988, the Morrison family captured thousands of portraits, landscapes, and buildings on film and glass negatives. In 1999 the Shenandoah County Historical Society acquired over 31,000 of these negatives from the estate of local collector Charles D. Bauserman. Volunteers from the historical society worked over the next several decades to house, number, and scan each image. This effort resulted in over two tons of Morrison plates and negatives being processed and digitized. This collection contains those digitized versions of these photographs. Through a partnership between the historical society and the Shenandoah County Library's Truban Archives access to a growing number of these images is available to the public. Current projections indicate the full collection will be available for viewing sometime in 2028. This collection does contain some images of a sexual and/or graphic nature that some viewers may find inappropriate. Barbara was the daughter of Raymond Alexander and Beulah Lee (Hockman) Rudy. She grew up in rural Edinburg with two older brothers, Mark and Raymond, Jr. Her father sold automobiles. She married Dick Delford Bowman (1928-2018) in 1949. He had graduated from Triplett High School and had a degree in Accounting. He was interested in farming. Dick Bowman and his older brother started a John Deere tractor and equipment dealership in Mount Jackson in 1955. He also farmed. Over the decades, Barbara raised three children and helped her husband grow the farm and business. The couple lived on South Middle Road on the original Bowman homeplace and were actively involved with their community and church during their years together. Fansler, as a young boy, seated on a chair in studio. Thomas was born in Mount Jackson to Burtelle Whitmore (1917-1998) and Virginia Louise (Funkhouser) (1918-2009) Fansler. He had a brother, J. Randall, and a sister, Susie, Fansler. He graduated from Stonewall Jackson High School in Quicksburg in 1963. He is pictured in the 1962 and 1963 yearbooks as having been one of the school’s bus drivers as well as a student. He later graduated from Virginia Tech in Blacksburg, Virginia, with undergraduate and graduate degrees in chemical engineering. While a student, he met and married Barbara Louise Rogge, from Baton Rouge, Louisiana. She was the daughter of Edward Sidonius (1923-1988) and Evelyn Elizabeth (Kling) (1926-2005) Rogge, Jr. They married just before Christmas in 1966 in Harrisonburg, Virginia, while both were students at Virginia Tech. They have three sons. By 1970, Thomas worked for Dupont De Nemours Company in Camden, South Carolina. He had a long career in the design and construction of facilities worldwide working for DuPont and Allied Signal/Honeywell. After, he and his wife moved to Moneta, Virginia, near Smith Mountain Lake, where Thomas entered the real estate sales business in the early 2000’s. He and his wife have been very active in their Moneta community as well.
