Title A name given to the resource Morrison Studio Collection Subject The topic of the resource Morrison, Hugh Jr. (1871-1950) Morrison, Louis Morrison, James Description An account of the resource In 1899 Hugh Morrison Jr. opened a photograph studio on W. Court Street in Woodstock after several years of working in the area as a travelling photographer. Between that time, and the time his grandson James Morrison closed the studio in 1988, the Morrison family captured thousands of portraits, landscapes, and buildings on film and glass negatives. In 1999 the Shenandoah County Historical Society acquired over 31,000 of these negatives from the estate of local collector Charles D. Bauserman. Volunteers from the historical society worked over the next several decades to house, number, and scan each image. This effort resulted in over two tons of Morrison plates and negatives being processed and digitized. This collection contains those digitized versions of these photographs. Through a partnership between the historical society and the Shenandoah County Library's Truban Archives access to a growing number of these images is available to the public. Current projections indicate the full collection will be available for viewing sometime in 2028. This collection does contain some images of a sexual and/or graphic nature that some viewers may find inappropriate. Eva (Sager) Hottel: Eva was the daughter of Jess Luther and Lula (Borden) Sager, a farming family. In 1931, she married John Paul Hottel (1907-1974) in Strasburg. He was the son of J.W. and Annie M. (Coffman) Hottel. Over the ensuing years, the couple raised five children. By 1950, the family lived in the Stonewall District of Shenandoah County. Eva’s oldest son, John Edward was no longer living with them. Her mother-in-law, Annie M. (Coffman) Hottel, was widowed and living with them. John Edward Hottel: John E. Hottel graduated from Woodstock High School in 1949 and went into the Army soon after. As a Sergeant, he served during the Korean War. John married Priscilla Agnes (Wallace) (1935-2013) in New Hampshire, in 1954, while he was stationed at Ft. Bragg, N.C. She was a 19-year old telephone operator from Nashua. The couple honeymooned in New York, Washington D.C., and Virginia before heading back to Ft. Bragg. Upon his discharge from the Army in 1955, Mr. Hottel became a police officer for the Nashua Police Department. He also worked in the sales division for McLaughlin-Mayflower Moving and Storage in Nashua for many years, often winning many awards for being the top salesman. He was a well-known and well-respected real estate broker in the city of Nashua. John and his wife spent 51 years together and had two children: Pamela and Douglas Hottel. At some point, they moved to Spring, Texas, where they spent their last years. John was a son of John and Eva (Sager) Hottel.
