Laymon was born in Woodstock, the son of Gaylen Franklin Mowery (1921-1990) and Velma Catherine (Stepp) Mowery-Painter. He graduated from Central High School in 1966 and served in the U.S. Army in Vietnam. In 1970, he married Linda Darlene Ryman (1953- ) from Mount Jackson. That marriage did not last and the couple divorced in 1974, the same year Laymon resigned from the Mount Jackson Police force. In 1976, he married for the second time to Linda Sue (Richard) Spiggle, a woman born in West Virginia. By then, Laymon lived in the Staunton area, where he stayed for the rest of his life. His marriage to Linda (Richard) Spiggle ended in 1997. When he died in Fishersville, his obituary noted that his surviving wife was Susan (Moyer) Mowery. Two sons were mentioned as well: Christopher Wayne and William Franklin Mowery. The name, “Gaylen Mowery”, is written on the glass plate of this image. She married Phillip Sheridan Porter, Jr., born in Missouri, in 1952. He was in the U.S. Navy stationed at the Naval Air Station at Patuxent River, Maryland, at the time. Over the years, the couple had at least five children together and lived in Fairfax County for most of their married lives. She is buried in Riverview Cemetery, Strasburg, with her husband. Sharitz Subject The topic of the resource Sharitz, Thorold Joseph Brown (1911-1945) Description An account of the resource Portrait photograph of Thorold Joseph "T.J." Sharitz as a young man wearing a suit and tie. T.J. was from Wythe County, Virginia, but briefly worked as an agriculture teacher at Strasburg High School before World War Two. After the outbreak of the conflict, he enlisted in the US Army. He became a 1st Lieutenant with the 422 Infantry 106 Division in France during WWII. In January 1945 he was captured by the German Army and held at Stalag 13 in Bavaria. He died on April 5 1945 while a prisoner, some reports indicating he was shot while escaping. He is buried in the Lorraine American Cemetery in Lorraine, France. He received a purple heart, World War Two Victory Medal, Prisoner of War Medal, American Campaign Medal, Army Presidential Unit Citation, Army Good Conduct Medal, and the European-African-Middle Eastern Campaign Medal. He was a radio operator and served in the U.S. Navy. His parents were Ivor Glenn and Pheobe (Evans) Richards from Pennsylvania. Anna Mae and her husband had a daughter, Donna (Richards) Roberts. The couple spent decades together and lived in Houston, Texas, at the time of their deaths. Both are buried there.
