Court Street in Woodstock after several years of working in the area as a travelling photographer. Between that time, and the time his grandson James Morrison closed the studio in 1988, the Morrison family captured thousands of portraits, landscapes, and buildings on film and glass negatives. In 1999 the Shenandoah County Historical Society acquired over 31,000 of these negatives from the estate of local collector Charles D. Bauserman. Volunteers from the historical society worked over the next several decades to house, number, and scan each image. J. Eldred Swartz was the son of Charles Franklin and Ida Belle (Coffman) Swartz from the southern end of Shenandoah County. He graduated from William and Mary College in Williamsburg, Virginia. He is most remembered for his years as a teacher and principal for the Shenandoah County Public Schools, mostly in Mount Jackson. His wife was Virginia Ruth (Hornsby) Swartz, the daughter of LeRoy Alphonse (1869-1946) and Sudie (Shields) (1881-1948) Hornsby, from Hornsbyville, York County, Virginia. Like her husband, she graduated from William and Mary College. When they married in November 1940, J. Eldred was the Principal of Triplett Agricultural High School in Mount Jackson and Ruth was an instructor at Lane High School in Charlottesville. Before that, she had been a member of the faculty for several years at Poquoson High School near Newport News, Virginia. When J. Eldred Swartz registered for the WWII draft in 1942, his telephone number was “18” on the Mount Jackson exchange. Their daughter, Ida Sue (Swartz) Zirkle, was born in Newport News. She grew up to be a teacher in Mount Jackson and married Warren Eugene Zirkle in February 1968 in Williamsburg. He was the son of William Monroe and Fern Frances (Golladay) Zirkle. At the time of their marriage, he worked as a staff assistant for the telephone company. Sue and Warren Zirkle spent over four decades together until they divorced in 2011.
