He was a lifelong Shenandoah County resident from rural Woodstock. Floyd was the youngest of four children born to Jacob Otis and Nellie Catherine (Miller) Hoover, a farming family from the Woodstock area. In the 1930 and 1940 censuses for the Stonewall District, Floyd and his family lived with his maternal grandparents on their farm. When he registered for the WWII draft, he was described as being 5’7” tall and 136 pounds. After his first year of high school, Floyd enlisted in the military as a Private and served from August 1944 to June 1946. By 1950, Floyd’s grandparents were no longer living but his remaining family still lived at the farm. Floyd had a job as a shipping clerk in a coat factory. He married Mary Alice “Snookie” (Wisman) (1927-2017) Hoover in 1951 in Woodstock. Her parents were Lester Lynn and Eltie (Richard) Wisman. She had attended high school in Alexandria, Virginia. Over their many years together, the couple had a son, Gary H. Hoover, and a daughter, Marilyn (Hoover) Sollenberger. Both Floyd and his wife are buried in Woodstock. Simon was the son of the founder of Wender’s Department Store in Woodstock, William M. Wender (1881-1932) and his wife, Minnie (Howard) Wender (1882-1961), both originally from Baltimore, Maryland. Simon was born in Pennsylvania. He grew up on N. Church Street in Woodstock with his sister, Lenora. When his father died, Simon and his sister were left in charge of the flagship store in Woodstock as well as another in Mount Jackson. The Wenders store was a well-known fixture in the area until they closed in the early 1970’s. The local newspapers published many short notices about Simon Wender’s involvement in the community. Simon married Rosella (Orndorff) Wender (1909-2003). She was born in Strasburg to Walter R. and Effie Catherine Orndorff. Simon and Rosella had two children together, William M. and Deborah Jean Wender. Simon and his wife are buried in Beth El Cemetery in Harrisonburg, where they attended services. Pete was a naturalized citizen born in Greece. He was a partner in, and later co-owner of the New York Restaurant in Woodstock, Virginia, from 1922 until his death in 1956. Pete was the son of Angelo Blentson and immigrated in 1907. The 1930 census found him living on Main Street in Woodstock with four other Greek men who were all working as waiters in a restaurant. Pete married Rena P. Pappas (1900-1973) in 1931, and by 1950, the census found the couple still on Main Street and raising two children, Angelo (19 years old) and Helen (18 years old). After he died, his son, Angelo, opened the Blue Star Diner on the southern end of town. That establishment was later moved to Newport News by the family where it continued to exist for many additional years. The building that housed the New York Restaurant was eventually torn down to make room for the current Circuit Court building in Woodstock. From the Saumsville area, Gilbert was the only child born to Philip Ray (1895-1952) and Stella (Richman) (1897-1922) Coffman. His mother died soon after he was born. Gilbert went to live with his mother’s sister, Ida B. (Richman) Gochenour and her husband, Charles “Charley” W. Gochenour. Gilbert’s father re-married and had additional children with his second wife. In the 1930 and 1940 censuses, Gilbert lived with his aunt and uncle on Saumsville Road east of Maurertown. Both Gilbert and his uncle worked as carpenters in 1940. In February 1942, Gilbert enlisted in the U.S. Army Air Corps. He may have started out in the reserves. He served during WWII until his discharge in 1945. His gravestone notes his rank was Staff Sergeant. After the war, the 1950 census found him living in Arlington, Virginia. By then he was married to Neta M. (Racey) Coffman and they had a son, Steven, who was a year old. Gilbert worked as a reception clerk for the Red Cross. Eventually, Gilbert and his wife, Neta, moved back to Maurertown. He is buried in Sunset View Memorial Gardens in Woodstock. Title A name given to the resource Morrison Studio Collection Subject The topic of the resource Morrison, Hugh Jr. (1871-1950) Morrison, Louis Morrison, James Description An account of the resource In 1899 Hugh Morrison Jr. opened a photograph studio on W. Court Street in Woodstock after several years of working in the area as a travelling photographer. Between that time, and the time his grandson James Morrison closed the studio in 1988, the Morrison family captured thousands of portraits, landscapes, and buildings on film and glass negatives. In 1999 the Shenandoah County Historical Society acquired over 31,000 of these negatives from the estate of local collector Charles D. Bauserman. Volunteers from the historical society worked over the next several decades to house, number, and scan each image. This effort resulted in over two tons of Morrison plates and negatives being processed and digitized. This collection contains those digitized versions of these photographs. Through a partnership between the historical society and the Shenandoah County Library's Truban Archives access to a growing number of these images is available to the public. Current projections indicate the full collection will be available for viewing sometime in 2028. This collection does contain some images of a sexual and/or graphic nature that some viewers may find inappropriate. Phyllis was from Mount Jackson, the daughter of Homer Allen Sr. (1886-1968) and Margaret Alice (Barton) (1887-1970) Long. She came from a large family. In 1942, she married a man from Woodstock. Irvin Kern Fravel (1913-2004) was a bit older and worked as a hotel manager when they married. The couple had a son together, Robert Allen, but the marriage ended soon after. She was divorced by 1945. Phyllis married again a year later in Virginia Beach. Her second husband was Noah Hughes (1909-1997), born in North Carolina. He managed a poultry farm in the 1950 census for the Lee District of Shenandoah County. Robert was listed as a 7-year old step-son in that record. However, when Robert married years later, his last name was Hughes and his father was listed as Noah Hughes. Phyllis lived in Timberville, near Harrisonburg, when she died.
