Charlotte was born in Strasburg, the daughter of Brooks Thomas and Thelma Marie (Polk) Mumaw of Middletown, Frederick County. She married Milton Roy McInturff, Jr., the son of Milton Roy and Clara Lee (Sine) McInturff, in 1943. Milton was in the U.S. Navy at the time. The marriage did not last and a divorce was granted in 1948. Her second husband was Jack Miller Kline (1923-1968), a veteran of WWII and the owner of Kline’s Garage, where he was a mechanic. His parents were William Russell and Maude Margaret (Miller) Kline. Charlotte worked as a weaver in the silk mill when the couple married. They both lived in Strasburg. After Jack Kline died, Charlotte married again in 1979. Her third husband was Robert William Porsche (1912-1996), born in Massachusetts. He had lost his first wife in a fire the year before. Court Street in Woodstock after several years of working in the area as a travelling photographer. Between that time, and the time his grandson James Morrison closed the studio in 1988, the Morrison family captured thousands of portraits, landscapes, and buildings on film and glass negatives. In 1999 the Shenandoah County Historical Society acquired over 31,000 of these negatives from the estate of local collector Charles D. Bauserman. Volunteers from the historical society worked over the next several decades to house, number, and scan each image. This effort resulted in over two tons of Morrison plates and negatives being processed and digitized. This collection contains those digitized versions of these photographs. Through a partnership between the historical society and the Shenandoah County Library's Truban Archives access to a growing number of these images is available to the public. Born in Strasburg, John was the first child of James Wesley (1892-1961) and Maudie Lee (Lake) (1901-1970) Overholtz. His father worked as a brakeman, then a flagman, for the Southern Railroad Company. John grew up on East Washington Street in Strasburg and had a younger sister, Catherine (Overholtz) Fisher (ca 1922-2018). When he registered for the WWII draft, he worked in Winchester at the O’Sullivan Rubber Plant. He was described as being 6’3” tall and 175 pounds. John served in the U.S. Army from 1941-1945. He married a woman named Catherine Reedy in Fort Monmouth, New Jersey, in 1942. They did not have children, and divorced in 1960. John married again to Doris Lee (Wingfield) Bowman (1919-1964) in 1962, a widow born in Lexington to William Patrick and Lottie Beatrice (Hicks) Wingfield. When John and Doris married, both lived in Strasburg, and John worked as an electrician. They moved to Waynesboro sometime after that. Doris died only a couple of years later. John moved to Wheeling, West Virginia, where he met and married his third wife, Helen Lillian Suveges (1925-1998), in 1970. He died, years later, in Wheeling. He was valedictorian at Woodstock High School. Percy Brown was born in Carmel, an unincorporated place located within Fort Valley. His parents were James William and Martha C. Brown, a farming couple. In the 1910 census, the family lived and farmed on Back Road in the Johnston District of the County. Percy was the second youngest of six siblings. His WWI Draft registration listed him as being a student at Woodstock High School. By 1930, Percy had gone to Chicago where he lodged with many others in a YMCA. He was still single and worked as a clerk. When he registered for the WWII draft in 1942, he lived in Tiffin, Seneca County, Ohio, where one “C.H. Brown” was listed as his emergency contact. At that time, Percy worked for Webster Manufacturing Company. By 1950, he had married Barbara A. Zeiter (1909-1994) and was raising a family with her in Clinton, Ohio. The census found Percy working as a pricing clerk in a metal manufacturing industry there. He and his wife had two children: Martha (who was 4 years old) and George (who was just 2 years old). Both he and his wife are buried in Tiffins, Seneca County, Ohio. Washington D.C. and worked at the Navy Yard there. He was described as being 6’1” tall and 165 lbs. He married Carmella Sciacca, in 1945, while he was in the Army. She was a telegraph operator in Washington D.C. The couple married in Winchester. By 1950, Marvin and Carmella lived in N.E. Washington D.C., with their 4-year old son, George R. Middleton. Marvin was a Staff Sergeant in the U.S. Army Air Corps. Carmella worked as a clerk typist. In 1961, when Marvin’s father died, he and his family still lived in Washington D.C. Not long after that, the family moved back to Strasburg. On 25 November 1963, the Northern Virginia Daily newspaper reported (on page 6) that Marvin L. Middleton, “of Strasburg”, had been admitted to the hospital after a single car accident that occurred .5 miles south of Seven Fountains on Route 678. He was driving a 1955 Cadillac when he missed a curve, went over a bank, and hit a barn belonging to P.G. Coverstone. His injuries were not life-threatening. When he died more than 25 years later, he was buried in Riverview Cemetery in Strasburg. Between that time, and the time his grandson James Morrison closed the studio in 1988, the Morrison family captured thousands of portraits, landscapes, and buildings on film and glass negatives. In 1999 the Shenandoah County Historical Society acquired over 31,000 of these negatives from the estate of local collector Charles D. Bauserman. Volunteers from the historical society worked over the next several decades to house, number, and scan each image. This effort resulted in over two tons of Morrison plates and negatives being processed and digitized. This collection contains those digitized versions of these photographs. Through a partnership between the historical society and the Shenandoah County Library's Truban Archives access to a growing number of these images is available to the public. Current projections indicate the full collection will be available for viewing sometime in 2028. This collection does contain some images of a sexual and/or graphic nature that some viewers may find inappropriate. Born in Strasburg, she was the oldest child of Robert Fleming (1876-1944) and Hattie May (Hottel) (1882-1922) Balthis. Interestingly, her civil birth was recorded later, in 1946, when a bible from the 1870’s was produced with her birth recorded in it. Her Aunt Mary Grace Kneisley, by then in her eighties, affirmed the birth entry. Her father worked as a telegraph operator. Eleonor had two younger brothers. She grew up on Queen Street in Strasburg and lived there for much of her life. She went to Madison Teachers College where she earned a B.S. in History and Government and a Masters in Education. The 1930 census found her living in Hagerstown, Maryland, with two Kneisley women who were likely relatives. There, she worked as a “music supervisor” at a public school. The 1947 yearbook from Warren County High School included her as an instructor of Language Arts and Social Studies. Sometime after that, she accepted a faculty position at Strasburg High School, where she was a well-known teacher of music and government for many years. She never married.
