Frances was the daughter of Carlos Smith Keister (1888-1974) of Strasburg and Louise de Segur (Balthis) (1891-1978) Keister of Charlottesville. Her father was a well-known cattle dealer and farmer in the Strasburg area. In 1930 and 1940, the family lived on North Street in Strasburg. Frances attended Mary Washington College in Fredericksburg and graduated from the University of Texas at Brownsville. She married Samuel Nicholas Metcalfe, Jr. (1922-1985), of New Windsor, Maryland, in 1942. At that time, she worked as a secretary and lived in Charlottesville with her grandmother. Samuel was the son of Samuel N. and Carmen (Nichodemus) Metcalfe. He had graduated from the Staunton Military Academy and was a senior studying chemical engineering at the University of Virginia when he married. Frances and Samuel spent most of their married lives in Maryland. He served in the Merchant Marines during WWII, and after, he worked as a chemical engineer for the U.S. Government at Ft. Detrick for over 27 years before retiring in 1971. Over the years the couple had four children together: Samuel Nicholas Metcalfe III, Randolph Carlos Metcalfe, Lauve Louise Metcalfe, and Christopher Nicholas Metcalfe. Court Street in Woodstock after several years of working in the area as a travelling photographer. Between that time, and the time his grandson James Morrison closed the studio in 1988, the Morrison family captured thousands of portraits, landscapes, and buildings on film and glass negatives. In 1999 the Shenandoah County Historical Society acquired over 31,000 of these negatives from the estate of local collector Charles D. Bauserman. Volunteers from the historical society worked over the next several decades to house, number, and scan each image. This effort resulted in over two tons of Morrison plates and negatives being processed and digitized. This collection contains those digitized versions of these photographs. Through a partnership between the historical society and the Shenandoah County Library's Truban Archives access to a growing number of these images is available to the public. Current projections indicate the full collection will be available for viewing sometime in 2028. This collection does contain some images of a sexual and/or graphic nature that some viewers may find inappropriate.
