Title A name given to the resource Shenandoah County (Va) Boys Leaving Woodstock for Camp Humphries Subject The topic of the resource World War (1914-1918) Shenandoah County (Va) Description An account of the resource On July 26th, 1918 local photographer Hugh Morrison took this photograph of local men preparing to basic training at Camp Humphries, now Fort Belvoir, in Fairfax County Virginia. It was taken on the steps of the Woodstock Depot. It was from here that most Shenandoah County men departed for service in the conflict after being sworn in at the historic courthouse two blocks away. After a national draft was instituted in 1917, these departures became commonplace. Several hundred men and women from the area would go off to war. Most would become part of the US Army and would receive basic training at Camp Humphries or Camp Lee. Scores would go overseas. Several would never return. The names of the men in this photograph are unknown. If you can identify them, please let us know. Title A name given to the resource Earl Dyer Subject The topic of the resource Dyer, Earl World War (1939-1945) Description An account of the resource A photograph showing Earl Dyer of Woodstock taken by Hugh Morrison of Woodstock. Earl Franklin Dyer had enlisted in the US Army in May of 1945. A native of Woodstock, he was living in Mananas Virginia at the time because it was the closest High School that allowed black students to his home. Though he did not see any combat during the Second World War, Dyer was deployed to Japan as part of the occupation force. He served until 1947 and was discharged with the rank of corporal. Despite having served alongside white soldiers, Dyer returned to a community that was still segregated. He and other local African Americans would have to wait decades to receive equal service in Shenandoah County. When he returned to Woodstock, Dyer moved into his family home on Church Street and worked as a cook at Shenandoah Memorial Hospital. He also served as a local music teacher and pianist/choir director at many area churches, including his own Mt. Zion UMC in Woodstock. Earl died in 2008 and is buried at Riverview Cemetery in Woodstock. He enlisted in the United States Marine Corps on January 7, 1942 and was trained in Parris Island South Carolina. On October 26 1942 he was deployed to the Pacific where he served in the Gilbert Islands, at Tarawa, and in the Mariana Island chain. Burner participated in the invasion of Saipan in June of 1944. He was killed in action on that island on June 15, 1944. Title A name given to the resource Peach Seed Shipment at the Woodstock Depot Subject The topic of the resource World War, 1914-1918 Woodstock (Va) Description An account of the resource In 1915 the German Army released the effective Chlorine gas attack of World War One against British positions in Ypres. Before the end of the war these types of Chemical agents would kill or injure millions of men on both sides. To combat these poisons a gas mask was developed that utilized charcoal to filter incoming air. One of the most effective sources of the charcoal needed came from peach seeds. After entering the war in 1917 the US government launched a massive drive to collect peach pits for its soldier’s masks. This photograph shows the results of one such drive in Shenandoah County. Local boy scouts and citizens pose at the Woodstock depot with a large shipment of peach pits obtained through the Chapin-Sacks Company. The scouts and those who helped them appear to be proud of the large amount of life saving materials they were providing. Collections of these materials, and other types of drives, would continue in the county throughout WWI. Most of these items, and many others would be shipped from the railroad depot which served the community until it was demolished in the 1950s. Chapin-Sacks, which produced ice and refrigerated products such as peaches, would be purchased by the Southern Dairy in the 1920s. Production ceased there in the 1970s and the North Street site became the Town of Woodstock’s Public Works facility. Today, it is abandoned. Ralph B. Crabill (1895-1963) was employed as a jeweler in Strasburg when he was drafted on October 4 1917. He deployed to France on June 7 1918 as part of the 80th Infantry Division. Ralph saw conflict in the Picardy Sector in July 1918, the St. Mihel Offensive in September 1918, and the Muese Argonne Offensive from September-November 1918. During the course of the war he rose from the rank of Private to Sergeant. He was discharged on June 7 1919 and returned to his position as a jeweler in Strasburg. On his postwar service survey he left no comment on how he viewed the war or how it affected him. Myers (1896-1969) worked on his father’s farm in Maurertown VA when he volunteered for the National Guard in June 1917. Part of the 29th Infantry Division, he went to France in June of 1918 and entered combat on July 16 1918. Serving in the Meuse-Argonne sector, Myers was wounded and gassed on October 8 1918. Discharged in February of 1919, he returned to his father’s farm.
