Frye, Jr. posed between them. Freddy's parents were Andrew Worth Frye and Minnie Mae (Coffman) Frye. His wife, Louise, was the daughter of Walter Elliott and Lucy Virginia (Richard) Richman. Frederick A. “Freddie” Frye and his wife were Woodstock residents. Together, they raised four children. During the Second World War Freddy served in the US Navy as a Seabee. He is remembered for having been the co-owner and manager of the Ideal Food Market located on Main Street, later the Woodstock IGA Grocery Store, from the 1950s through the 1980s. George was born in Jerome to Pius Martin (1876-1952) and Rebecca Frances (Nesselrodt) (1885-1969) Miller, a farming couple. He married in April 1937 in Mt. Jackson. His bride was 16-year old Irene Pauline Spitler. She was the daughter of Mathias C. (1882-1949) and Mamie May (Whitmer) (1904-1983) Spitler. At that time, George was 21 years old and farmed in Jerome, probably on his father’s farm. When he registered for the WWII draft, he worked for William B. Clark at Bird Haven Farm near Basye, Virginia. The wood-working factory stood on land owned by Mr. Clark and provided many local residents with income during the years it operated. George served in the U.S. Army and by 1950, he had returned to the area. The census found both George and his wife, Irene, living in the Ashby District. Both were employed at a wood-crafting factory, probably Bird Haven Farm. The couple had two daughters together: Sandra (Miller) Rinker and Betty Ann (Miller) Meadors. Hepner in a U.S. Army uniform (left) posed beside his brother, William B. Hepner (right). The brothers were the sons of Charles Luther and Ruth Geneva (Mumaw) Hepner of Conicville. The patch on Leonard's uniform indicates he was a member of the Army's Service Forces. He served in during World War II in Germany and the Philippines. A machinist by trade, he constructed the prototype of the Norton Bomb Sight for targeted B52 bombing during World War II. His first wife was Anna Lee Link (1926-1957). After she died, Leonard married again to Ora Lee Hotinger, a woman he spent over 50 years with before he died. William was a 1939 graduate of Triplett High School and, like his brother, an army veteran of World War II. He was employed with Rust Engineers when they built the American Viscose Plant in Front Royal. Later, he was employed by American Viscose. He also worked for the U.S. Postal Service at the Woodstock Office as a postal clerk retiring on April 1, 1988 after 30 years. After retirement he worked with his son at Valley Flower Shop for several years. He married Pollyanna (Burnshire) Hepner in 1946 and together, they raised two children, Charles W. Court Street in Woodstock after several years of working in the area as a travelling photographer. Between that time, and the time his grandson James Morrison closed the studio in 1988, the Morrison family captured thousands of portraits, landscapes, and buildings on film and glass negatives. In 1999 the Shenandoah County Historical Society acquired over 31,000 of these negatives from the estate of local collector Charles D. Bauserman. Volunteers from the historical society worked over the next several decades to house, number, and scan each image. This effort resulted in over two tons of Morrison plates and negatives being processed and digitized. This collection contains those digitized versions of these photographs. Through a partnership between the historical society and the Shenandoah County Library's Truban Archives access to a growing number of these images is available to the public. Current projections indicate the full collection will be available for viewing sometime in 2028. This collection does contain some images of a sexual and/or graphic nature that some viewers may find inappropriate.
