Born in Roanoke, Al was the son of Wiley W. and Annie L. Lavinder. He served in the US Army, 29th Infantry Division as a Sergeant during WWll. On D-Day, June 6,1944, Al landed on Omaha Beach. Several days later he was wounded and awarded the Purple Heart. After the war, he went to work at Ft. Meade, Maryland, as a Food Supply Supervisor, retiring after 41 years of service. Born in Edinburg, Dorothy was the daughter of Edward and Della (Pence) Lantz. She was the sister of Louise (Lantz) Luttrell. Married in the mid-1950s, the couple spent 62 years together before Al died. Both are buried in Glen Burnie, Maryland, where they spent much of their married lives together. Court Street in Woodstock after several years of working in the area as a travelling photographer. Between that time, and the time his grandson James Morrison closed the studio in 1988, the Morrison family captured thousands of portraits, landscapes, and buildings on film and glass negatives. In 1999 the Shenandoah County Historical Society acquired over 31,000 of these negatives from the estate of local collector Charles D. Bauserman. Volunteers from the historical society worked over the next several decades to house, number, and scan each image. This effort resulted in over two tons of Morrison plates and negatives being processed and digitized. This collection contains those digitized versions of these photographs. Through a partnership between the historical society and the Shenandoah County Library's Truban Archives access to a growing number of these images is available to the public. Current projections indicate the full collection will be available for viewing sometime in 2028. Lichliter Subject The topic of the resource Lichliter, Charles Franklin "Jack" (1914-1989) Military personnel - American - Virginia - Shenandoah County Description An account of the resource Portrait photograph of Charles F. Lichliter wearing his U.S. Army Air Force uniform. Charles was from Strasburg, the third of at least six children born to Walter Franklin (1883-1962) and Mary Catherine (Fishel) (1884-1974) Lichliter. In 1920, the census found the family living on Capon Grade in the Davis District of Shenandoah County. His widowed grandfather, John L. Lichliter, lived with them. His father worked as a cooper for the lime works. Ten years later, the family lived on Capon Street in Strasburg. They owned their home and Charles’ father was listed as a general laborer. Charles married Edith Virginia Himelright in Hagerstown, Maryland, in 1935. She was born in Frederick County, the daughter of Charles Oliver (1879-1946) and Vernie M. (Sherman) (1888-1958) Himelright. When they married, she lived in Star Tannery. Their home in 1940 was Oranda, near Strasburg. Charles worked as a contractor at the stone quarry and Edith looked after their 3-year old daughter, Connie (Lichliter) Himelright (1936-2014). His WWII draft registration that year specified the National Gypsum and Lime Company as his employer. Charles served in the U.S. Army from 1944-1946. Probably, this photograph was taken during that time. The 1950 census found Charles living on East King Street in Strasburg and working as a taxi driver. His wife, Edith, worked as a doffer at the American Viscose plant in Front Royal. (Her obituary noted she retired from the plant after 30 years of service). Her widowed mother, Vernie, lived with them and their two children, Connie and Gene Allen Lichliter. When he died, his death certificate listed his occupation as a retired iron worker. The name, "Chas. F. Lichliter", was written on the glass plate negative. Also, the words, "Costello people" were scrawled on the edge of the plate. We are unsure of the meaning. She is holding her great-granddaughter Elizabeth Newman. Her grandson Wilbur Lauck Newman stands at the rear of the image. On the left is Elizabeth’s son, Edgar Douglas Newman. Elizabeth (Hickman) Newman was born in Hampshire County, West Virginia. Her father was John T. Hickman. Her mother’s maiden name was “Trout”. She married Benjamin Pennybacker Newman (1823-1902) on May 6, 1851, and lived near Liberty Furnace for many years as her husband owned the iron furnace. The 1860 census found the family still there and by that time, Elizabeth and her husband had four young sons. Later the family moved to Woodstock where they farmed. Edgar grew up on his father's farm, tending to horses, sheep, and cattle. He was a 1876 graduate of Virginia Military Institute. In 1877, he began his career as an attorney in the office of Walton and Walton, lawyers in Woodstock. That same year, he married Miss. Mary Ott Walton. The couple had six children, Wilbur L., Edgar, Helen, Harold, Houston, and Douglas. From 1886 to 1898, he served as a judge of the County Court of Shenandoah County. He also served on the board of directors for Massanutten Military Academy at the time of their founding. William Lauck Newman was the oldest child of Edgar Douglas Newman. He married Ruth (Koontz) Newman and by 1910, they lived on Church Street in Woodstock, where he was a lawyer. The couple stayed there many years and had many more children, mostly daughters, until William died unexpectedly of a heart issue in 1928. He is buried in Massanutten Cemetery in Woodstock. Elizabeth Newman graduated from Randolph Macon Women’s College in Lynchburg where she was a member of Phi Beta Kappa. She went on to earn a master’s degree from Columbia University. Elizabeth was part of the staff of the public libraries in both New York City and Detroit, Michigan. She married William Acheson MacDonough (1904-1987) and they settled together in Seneca, South Carolina. She left behind a son and a daughter when she died. Shaffer Subject The topic of the resource Shaffer, William Robert (1916-1996) Description An account of the resource Portrait photograph of William Robert Shaffer. He is best remembered for his work as a poultryman, and as a former Mayor of Woodstock, and a former member of the Virginia General Assembly. Bill Shaffer was born in Middletown to Vernon Spitler (1884-1958) and Mary Leah (Stover) (1885-1973) Shaffer, originally from Page County. In 1920, the family lived for a time in Berryville, Clark County, where his father worked in a flour mill. They moved to Maurertown where his father became a poultry farmer and hatchery operator. Bill graduated from Woodstock High School and Massanutten Military Academy (MMA). At a young age, Bill was active in the Future Farmers of America (FFA) and the Baby Chick Association. When Bill registered for the WWII draft, he worked at the Shenandoah Commercial Hatchery, his father’s operation. He was described as being 5’11 ½” tall, 150 pounds, and wore glasses. He married Elizabeth Moorhouse Jones in her hometown of Albany, New York, in 1943. She had graduated from Russell Sage College and worked for the American Viscose Company (later known as Avtex Fibers) as the Director of Publicity and Public Relations for the Lewistown, Pennsylvania, plant. At the time of his wedding, Bill was serving as a member of the Virginia House of Delegates. He served from 1942-1947, and was followed by his father who served from 1950-1958. Bill became a partner in his father’s hatchery business as well as the Woodstock Canning Company. The Northern Virginia Daily published over 150 short notices about his involvement in the community and local politics during the 1930’s, 1940’s, and 1950’s. The 1950 census found Bill and Elizabeth living on West Locust Street in Woodstock along with two children: Susan L. and Andrew T. Shaffer. His occupation was “Hatchery man”. Bill spent his last years living in the Bayles Lake area of Loda, Iroquois County, Illinois. Court Street in Woodstock after several years of working in the area as a travelling photographer. Between that time, and the time his grandson James Morrison closed the studio in 1988, the Morrison family captured thousands of portraits, landscapes, and buildings on film and glass negatives. In 1999 the Shenandoah County Historical Society acquired over 31,000 of these negatives from the estate of local collector Charles D. Bauserman. Volunteers from the historical society worked over the next several decades to house, number, and scan each image. This effort resulted in over two tons of Morrison plates and negatives being processed and digitized. This collection contains those digitized versions of these photographs. Through a partnership between the historical society and the Shenandoah County Library's Truban Archives access to a growing number of these images is available to the public. Current projections indicate the full collection will be available for viewing sometime in 2028. This collection does contain some images of a sexual and/or graphic nature that some viewers may find inappropriate.
