Anna Mae grew up in Strasburg, the second oldest of at least seven siblings. Her parents were Rev. Donald Frederick (1897-1973) and Phyllis Cornelia (Banks) (1904-1949) Williams. Her father was a Baptist Minister in Strasburg. In 1930, the family lived on 4th Street and Anna Mae’s father worked at a lime plant. Ten years later, the family lived on C Street where her father worked at a stone quarry. Anna Mae Williams married Frederick Jackson (1925-1999) in 1948. His parents were William (1895-1987) and Edna Mae (Willis) (1904-1942) Jackson. Tragically, Frederick’s mother had been killed by a hit-and-run driver in the early hours of January 21st, 1942. By 1950, the census found Anna Mae and Frederick Jackson still living in Strasburg. Anna Mae looked after her 3-year old daughter, Constance M. Court Street in Woodstock after several years of working in the area as a travelling photographer. Between that time, and the time his grandson James Morrison closed the studio in 1988, the Morrison family captured thousands of portraits, landscapes, and buildings on film and glass negatives. In 1999 the Shenandoah County Historical Society acquired over 31,000 of these negatives from the estate of local collector Charles D. Bauserman. Volunteers from the historical society worked over the next several decades to house, number, and scan each image. This effort resulted in over two tons of Morrison plates and negatives being processed and digitized. This collection contains those digitized versions of these photographs. Through a partnership between the historical society and the Shenandoah County Library's Truban Archives access to a growing number of these images is available to the public. Current projections indicate the full collection will be available for viewing sometime in 2028. This collection does contain some images of a sexual and/or graphic nature that some viewers may find inappropriate. Wayland Subject The topic of the resource Wayland, John Walter (1872-1962) Description An account of the resource Portrait photograph of Dr. John Walter Wayland, best remembered as the author of several books on the history of Shenandoah County. John Walter Wayland was born in Woodlawn, in the southwestern part of Shenandoah County, Virginia. He graduated from Bridgewater College in 1899 and in 1907 he received a Ph.D. from the University of Virginia in Charlottesville, Virginia. Dr. Wayland helped organize, and was one of the first faculty members at, the State Normal School in Harrisonburg, Virginia, which later became Madison College, and is presently James Madison University. He taught there until 1931. He also taught at various times at Bridgewater College, University of Virginia and University of Tennessee. He taught History and Social Science and was the department head while at the State Normal School. During his lifetime, Dr. Wayland published over thirty books. Locally, he is well-known for his Shenandoah County histories, however, he also authored "A History of Rockingham County", "How to Teach American History" and "A History of Virginia for Boys and Girls", among others. Besides writing books, he wrote the lyrics to the song "Old Virginia", set to music by Will H. Ruebush. He married Mattie Virginia Fry and they had two sons. He died at age 89, while shoveling snow.
