Korean War, 1950-1953 Description An account of the resource Pictured here is Jacob C. Saylor (left) with his Army buddy Corporal Lippki. Both were machine gunners in the Korean War. The image appeared in the Shenandoah Herald. Jacob C. Saylor was a New Market native that deployed to Korea on July 31st 1950 as a part of the 2nd Infantry Division. He fought in actions related to the defense of the Pusan Perimeter. He nicknamed his machine gun "Anna Belle." On August 31, 1950 Saylor was wounded and evacuated to Japan. He left the army in 1953 and currently residents in Broadway Virginia. Title A name given to the resource Corporal Linden Zirkle Subject The topic of the resource Zirkle, Linden Korean War, 1950-1953 Description An account of the resource This photo shows Corporal Linden Zirkle of New Market fusing a tank mine somewhere in South Korea. It appeared on the front page of the September 7, 1950 Shenandoah Herald. At the time the United States forces in Korea were attempting to stop the North Korean advance into the south. Zirkle was a member of the 25th Infantry, nicknamed “Tropic Lightning.” Corporal Zirkle was captured by the North Koreans in December of 1950 and would remain a captive until released in August of 1953. He returned to the New Market area and died on September 13, 1965 at the age of 38. He graduated from New Market High School in 1950 and the same year enlisted in the US Army for a three year period. Dellinger deployed to Korea as a part of the 15th Infantry Division where he served in a motor vehicle company. A report on his service in the Shenandoah Herald noted his letters observed “fighting was severe and the soldiers’ sleeping quarters for most part were in fox holes.” Nevin Dellinger continues to live in the New Market community of Shenandoah County.
