He is best remembered as the author of several books on the history of Shenandoah County. John Walter Wayland was born in Woodlawn, in the southwestern part of Shenandoah County, Virginia. He graduated from Bridgewater College in 1899 and in 1907 he received a Ph.D. from the University of Virginia in Charlottesville, Virginia. Dr. Wayland helped organize, and was one of the first faculty members at, the State Normal School in Harrisonburg, Virginia, which later became Madison College, and is presently James Madison University. He taught there until 1931. He also taught at various times at Bridgewater College, University of Virginia and University of Tennessee. He taught History and Social Science and was the department head while at the State Normal School. During his lifetime, Dr. Wayland published over thirty books. Locally, he is well-known for his Shenandoah County histories, however, he also authored "A History of Rockingham County", "How to Teach American History" and "A History of Virginia for Boys and Girls", among others. Besides writing books, he wrote the lyrics to the song "Old Virginia", set to music by Will H. Ruebush. He married Mattie Virginia Fry and they had two sons. He died at age 89, while shoveling snow. Teddy was the son of Leonidas and Mattie (Coffelt) Lantz. His father had been married before and had children from his previous marriage. A vintage Morrison photograph reprinted in the Shenandoah Herald newspaper in 1967 showed the Union Forge School’s Class of 1907. Teddy was identified as one of the students pictured there. When he registered for the WWI draft in 1918, he worked in Washington D.C., as a railway postal clerk. His mother was listed as his emergency contact. She lived in Lantz Mill with his younger sisters. The 1920 census found him back in the Madison District of Shenandoah County on a farm that his family owned. He still worked as a mail clerk for the railroad. His mother was widowed. He married in June 1925 in Woodstock. His bride was Margaret Eleonore Bly (1894-1979), born in Fisher’s Hill, near Strasburg, to Philip P., a farmer, and Lydia M. (Swartz) Bly. At the time of the marriage, both Teddy and Margaret lived in Washington D.C. The couple had a daughter, Nellie Mae Lantz, born in late 1928. When he registered for the WWII draft, his employer was the U.S. Post Office located in Washington D.C., but he and his wife were listed as living in rural Edinburg. He was described as being 5’10” tall and 165 pounds. He had a mole on his right temple. Later in life, Teddy’s occupation was both a farmer and a mail clerk. His wife taught in the public schools until she retired. Both Teddy and Mary are buried in Sunset View Cemetery in Woodstock. Leonhardt Description An account of the resource Portrait photograph of Mr. Vincent Leon Leonhardt wearing a well-made suit and tie. He is best remembered for his years in Woodstock as the tailor for the students of Massanutten Military Academy (MMA). Born in Alsace, his native language was French. After he immigrated, he lived for many years in Wheeling, Ohio County, West Virginia. There, he started out as a cleaner and, by 1920, was a tailor with his own shop. He was still there in the 1930 census. His wife was Esther M. (Yeatman) (1895-1983) Leonhardt, originally from Maryland. The couple had a son, Vincent A. (1917-2013) and a daughter, Zoe Louise (1918-1999) Leonhardt. Both children were born in Wheeling. Sometime in the 1930’s, Mr. Leonhardt accepted a position at MMA and moved to Shenandoah County, Virginia. In the 1940 census, he lived on N. Church Street in Woodstock with his wife. He provided his tailoring expertise to the MMA cadets for more than ten years until he retired in the 1940’s and moved to Florida. The 1950 census found him there with his wife and an 11-year old grandson. Both Vincent and Esther were working as lunch room operators in Brevard County, Florida. He lived in St. Cloud, Osceola County, Florida, when he died many years later. Court Street in Woodstock after several years of working in the area as a travelling photographer. Between that time, and the time his grandson James Morrison closed the studio in 1988, the Morrison family captured thousands of portraits, landscapes, and buildings on film and glass negatives. In 1999 the Shenandoah County Historical Society acquired over 31,000 of these negatives from the estate of local collector Charles D. Bauserman. Volunteers from the historical society worked over the next several decades to house, number, and scan each image. This effort resulted in over two tons of Morrison plates and negatives being processed and digitized. This collection contains those digitized versions of these photographs. Through a partnership between the historical society and the Shenandoah County Library's Truban Archives access to a growing number of these images is available to the public. Current projections indicate the full collection will be available for viewing sometime in 2028. This collection does contain some images of a sexual and/or graphic nature that some viewers may find inappropriate.
