George Pappas was the son of Konstantine and Eleni Kotsikakis and was from Evrytanias, Greece, a region of mountains, rivers, and green hills in central Greece. In the 1930 census, George Pappas was one of five Greek men living in Woodstock, Virginia, where they were listed as partners in a restaurant. One of the partners, Pete Blentson, married Rena Pappas, who may have been George’s sister. George was not yet a US citizen in this record. He married Stella Argeris (born circa 1915) in Chryssou, Greece. He visited when he could. Their oldest daughter, Eva, was born in Marathia, Greece, around 1938. In October 1940, George was listed on the WWII draft registration card for James Kotsianas, as the person who would always know where Kotsianas was. George’s residence was still Woodstock. In February 1942, George registered for the WWII draft himself. His card noted he lived in Pulaski, Virginia, was 44 years old, born in Marathia, Greece (a village in the western part of Evrytania) and was “self-employed”. His emergency contact was John Fuseki. George was described as being 5’4” tall and 140 pounds. George’s wife, Stella and his oldest daughter, Evanthia (Eva), arrived in New York from Piraeus, Greece, aboard the S.S. Marine Carp, on December 1, 1947. The journey by sea had taken about 2 weeks. Eva was only 10 years old but had a U.S. passport issued in Athens. Her mother travelled with her and was a Greek citizen. Her father, Elias Argeris was left behind in Chryssou, Greece. Pulaski was their final destination. In the 1950 census, the family lived in Pulaski, Virginia, where they raised two daughters: Eva, born ca 1938 in Greece; and Helen Rena Pappas, born ca 1950 in Virginia. He operated a restaurant in Pulaski until his death years later. Stella continued to operate it after he died. The couple were married in 1932 and had a daughter, Betty Lou, born in the early 1940s in Washington D.C. When he registered for the WWII draft, John P. worked for C.W. Sollenberger in a feed and hardware store. He was described as being 5’6” tall and weighing 128 pounds. By 1950, the census found the family in the Stonewall District where John was an assistant manager of a Farm Bureau Store. When he died, his death certificate listed him as a retired manager of a feed and hardware store. Title A name given to the resource Morrison Studio Collection Subject The topic of the resource Morrison, Hugh Jr. (1871-1950) Morrison, Louis Morrison, James Description An account of the resource In 1899 Hugh Morrison Jr. opened a photograph studio on W. Court Street in Woodstock after several years of working in the area as a travelling photographer. Between that time, and the time his grandson James Morrison closed the studio in 1988, the Morrison family captured thousands of portraits, landscapes, and buildings on film and glass negatives. In 1999 the Shenandoah County Historical Society acquired over 31,000 of these negatives from the estate of local collector Charles D. Bauserman. Volunteers from the historical society worked over the next several decades to house, number, and scan each image. This effort resulted in over two tons of Morrison plates and negatives being processed and digitized. This collection contains those digitized versions of these photographs. Through a partnership between the historical society and the Shenandoah County Library's Truban Archives access to a growing number of these images is available to the public. Current projections indicate the full collection will be available for viewing sometime in 2028. This collection does contain some images of a sexual and/or graphic nature that some viewers may find inappropriate. She was the daughter of Bert and Elizabeth (Thomas) Dyer and grew up near Mount Jackson, later moving to Woodstock. Two of her oldest brothers, George (1903-1918) and Joe (ca 1904-1918) died during the influenza epidemic in 1918 and are buried in the Mount Jackson Colored Cemetery. In the 1920 census, Ella lived on "Scroge Town Road" in the Ashby District of Shenandoah County with her family. Her father worked as a farm laborer but was best remembered for winning a fund-raising debate for his church in 1924, held at the New Theatre in Woodstock. The question was whether married life was better than being single. Bert argued the positive side of being married. Ella worked cleaning houses. The 1950 census found her, still single, and living with her widowed mother, brother John, and nephew, Earl Dyer on West Spring Street in Woodstock. Sometime after that, she got a position with the Shenandoah County Schools. Her photograph appears in the 1956 Woodstock High School yearbook with other staff. At that time, she worked as a "Maid". Ella's husband was Warren Gilmer Thompson, Sr. (1921-2011). Both are buried together in River View Cemetery in Woodstock. Sarah was the daughter of Frank M. and Hattye (McLeod) Zea. She grew up in Strasburg. She married Frank Tavenner, Jr. from Woodstock, in 1920. Her husband is remembered for having served as a United States Attorney for the Western District of Virginia during the administration of Franklin D. Roosevelt and was a lawyer for the House Un-American Activities Committee. In addition, In addition, he served as a member of the Virginia Senate, representing the state's 10th district. Sarah was living in the Charlottesville area during her last years.
