We shot pistols for record yesterday. And I got sharpshooter rating which is 75% of 450 points I got 84% missing expert by one point. That isn’t very important though, the 30 cal. rifle is most important. We threw practice grenades today and every one qualified. We leave the range a week from this coming Wednesday then we fool around a few days and then have Mess duty for a week after that a week of bayonet practice and then leave for our outposts. I decided not to write until I shot for record so now that it’s over am sending the scores I made on the range. On the 30 cal rifle I made marksman-199 points out of 250 Pistol Sharpshooter 84 “ ” ” 100 Grenade expert 87 “ ” ” 100 Rising submachine gun 100 “ “ “ 100 expert And now ( how) I get medals for all of those and I can get one more for bayonet. The 30 cal rifle is the most important and as long as you qualify you do alright but if you don’t qualify it’s pretty bad--well I qualified. I shot much better up until second day but then I slipped but I qualified so I’m ok. I don’t think I did so bad do you? We have about two more weeks here and then I hope we shove off. If I get the furlough I have to have the price of a round trip ticket so please send me as near to $18 as you can but in being transferred and getting the furlough I miss two paydays and won’t get paid until Jan 20 and I need $12 to get home and back. I’ll explain in detail when I get home. I have been invited by the church in Kingston to a Christmas dinner and that’s another reason for the amount needed being $18 instead of $15 or twelve. You and she are the only people I hear from anymore. I haven’t heard from Dot or Va., lately and I wrote Leila the other day. I guess you know I got the box and clarinet ok. In 1941 he enlisted in the United States Marine Corps. He trained at Parris Island in South Carolina in 1942. Later that year he was transferred to San Diego and later Hawaii. In 1944 he was part of the invasion force that landed at Iwo Jima. After the war he lived in Arlington Virginia and married Ruby Beaver. He died in 1969. Dear Dad, I’m out in the field about 20 miles from camp, we have been here since Mon. and will be here till Wed. We get back Thursday Morning and then get a 72 hr. leave. I didn’t think we could send letters from here so brought no equipment with me so that’s why I’m using this paper [torn out of a note book ] and a pencil about 1 ½” long. I wanted to write soon so you would get this tomorrow but we have been going all week. We were on the go 17 hrs. yesterday. You should see me. I haven’t shaved since Sunday, and I have about a half of an inch of beard on my chin and face. I look like blue beard. They are making a movie out here called Guadalcanal Diary and they used us to make a beach landing so now I have been in movies. Who knows, maybe you will even be able to see me when it comes out. Yes I do like that girl in Strasburg quite a lot. I think she is super duper, but I ain’t married yet, not by a damn sight. Well Pappy I haven’t been drunk yet but I can see a guy’s point after going though what we did this week. They are having a smoker tonite some fights and free beer. The Captain said two bottles would probably knock use on our ass after being away a week, but it won’t bother me because that’s about all I ever drink in a week anyhow.
