Well, I have received all the boxes and pictures and they were sure swell-(both). I went to L.A. last weekend and a friend of mine took some [illegible] color pictures of my buddy and I. They won’t be ready for about five weeks, though, they have to go to New York to be developed. There is a rumor going around that we are getting a 15 day furlough with 2 days traveling time around Sept. 1. Don’t count on it, just hope for it. We are going out next week so don’t expect a letter for about a week and a half. The mail service is bad when we are in the field. Over. I get off of mess duty tomorrow. Boy has it been hell getting up at 4 and working till around 6:30. My buddy since Joe & Stine were transferred is Joe [Parvich or Parish]. Joe is from North Carolina and we are on mess duty together. He is a good looking guy about my size and I think he is 18 years old. We go out together all the time. Well last weekend we were ready to start home when a car pulled up and they ask us if we want a lift. We were going toward Long Beach talking to the lady in the car when we passed a convertible. They lady asked them to take us along. They said ok but we would have to come along home till about 7:30. We went along and met the family and then had a chicken supper. We picked up another girl at the house, a cousin of theirs. Two of the girls stopped at a dance in Long Beach and the other two brought us 86 miles back to Camp. We had a swell time, made a date for next weekend and got back to camp. Not bad luck. Well Love Joe. The athletics [sic] feet came back a little and that is why. Send me some envelopes, please. I am about out, and capital is running low, since I paid all my debts. I could also use some more socks. We are really starting to work hard now and we soon begin night work. Well I am sorry I didn’t write. I guess I am just a bad boy. I went out on liberty Sat. and they told me about the call on Mon. Yes, you can send me some books and tell Aunt Maudie I really enjoyed the one she sent me. I read it that same night waiting to go on guard duty. We came off of maneuvers Tuesday and went on a 72 hr. leave Wed. I didn’t send a wire because I knew it would disappoint you if I sent a wire because you would think I was coming. Well they are still canceled. I think we will get them after amphibious training. I’m getting along better since I got my stripe. I’m chief scout in charge of two men in my squad. They gave our platoon a new Louie and he was the best ever, but he was in an accident and had to have his arm amputated, so we got another today, a good guy (2nd Louie) by the name of “Reonalds” (spelled same as “Davis” Reonalds Ha). Mother I know “Margie” is young and expect her to go out and if she don’t wait for me I’ll understand but up till now she is tops. I haven’t found anything out here to equal her. Maybe I’m growing up. I’m almost 20 you know. I am beginning to feel proud of my outfit and myself. We made 30 miles in 9 hrs. carrying 60lbs and a rifle, and I’m bragging now, we only lost 30 men out of our Bn. And the third lost 200 in 10 1/2 hrs. Boy, were we dead. Boy what a liberty we pitched. Joe and [I] met about 10 girls. Two of them, the best in the bunch, took us home and we had a nice dinner and a lot of fun buying and fixing it. Joe and I washed all the dishes. Joe (Joe Parrish) is sure some wolf and a swell guy. We usually swap girls every time for some reason. Both of these [girls] were named Helen so we just stayed as we were. We went back Sat. morning and passed notes under the door till they got dressed and let us in. It was fun but the neighbors thought we had gotten fresh with the girls and that they were trying to keep us out and [the neighbors] were going to call a cop. Boy did they let us in quick then. Some people always have one foot in the gutter. I have been going to church regular and had communion the 5th in the field. Well gotta go hit the sack. Joseph Martin Hines was born in Toms Brook Virginia on December 1, 1923. His parents were Mary Thelma Borden and Duval “Du” Hines. Duval ran a general store in Toms Brook. Joseph Hines attended Toms Brook High School and graduated in 1941. He was a member of the school band, in which he played the clarinet, and of St. Peters Lutheran Church where he sand in the choir. In 1941 he enlisted in the United States Marine Corps. He trained at Parris Island in South Carolina in 1942. Later that year he was transferred to San Diego and later Hawaii. In 1944 he was part of the invasion force that landed at Iwo Jima. After the war he lived in Arlington Virginia and married Ruby Beaver. He died in 1969.
