Title A name given to the resource USA Service Roll Subject The topic of the resource World War (1939-1945) Description An account of the resource Between 1941 and 1945 over 12 million American men and women would serve in the county’s Armed Forces during the Second World War. Among them were several hundred from Shenandoah County. The parents, siblings, friends, and sweethearts who stayed hungered for news from these individuals who were deployed around the country and overseas. To do so they wrote letters, thousands of which were sent and delivered every day. Service rolls like this helped residents know where locals were at so they could send letters and keep track of their service. When this roll was produced, or where it was kept, is unknown. Most likely it came from the Edinburg area since most of the names listed on it were Edinburg residents. These individuals were in the coastal artillery, the US Navy, the infantry, and the air corps. One was even a WASP which were female pilots trained to ferry air craft for the US Army. They were deployed at several places around the country. Toms Brook (Va) World War (1939-1945) Description An account of the resource A collection of images and letters associated with Joseph M. Hines. The vast majority are letters from his time serving with the United States Marine Corps in the Pacific Theater during World War Two. Joseph Martin Hines was born in Toms Brook Virginia on December 1, 1923. His parents were Mary Thelma Borden and Duval “Du” Hines. Duval ran a general store in Toms Brook. Joseph Hines attended Toms Brook High School and graduated in 1941. He was a member of the school band, in which he played the clarinet, and of St. Peters Lutheran Church where he sand in the choir. In 1941 he enlisted in the United States Marine Corps. He trained at Parris Island in South Carolina in 1942. Later that year he was transferred to San Diego and later Hawaii. In 1944 he was part of the invasion force that landed at Iwo Jima. After the war he lived in Arlington Virginia and married Ruby Beaver. He died in 1969. (Gochenour) Alexander in her nurses uniform. Vada was from Woodstock, the twin sister of Vera Gochenour. Her parents were Ben and Georgia (Stultz) Gochenour. Vada graduated from the Rockingham Memorial Hospital (RMH) School of Nursing, probably in 1947, and lived in Harrisonburg until 2005, when she moved to Bridgewater. In 1948, Vada married Joseph Alfred Alexander. The couple raised two children together: Joseph Philip Alexander and Dorethia "Dea" (Alexander) Baldwin. After raising her family, she worked for 13 years as an industrial nurse for Dunham Bush. She was the founder of the Harrisonburg - Rockingham Parkinson Support Group, and was known by both residents and staff throughout the Bridgewater Retirement Community as the "Plant Lady" because she nurtured and watered all the potted plants.
