Now don’t get excited it isn’t bad at all just one bone my 5th metarsal! I walk on it with a cast and walking iron. We were playing basketball between shows and my shoe came off. I stepped on it that ended my part of the game. I’m in a hospital near camp recovering and having a vacation. My picture will probably be in the paper with some crazy story and telling about the show. They are still showing and doing rather well without me. I sure hope they have lots of luck. I expect I have about 10 days here yet. About the show. I did several gags, one a Russian dialect & Abner of Lumb & Abner sometimes. I was the only girl in our Arabian act with hair on her chest. That piece in the paper may have been sent from here. They took my picture in costume to send to the hometown paper. If the picture comes out in the paper send it with the write up. I would like to see what they say about me. Dad I get homesick at times, but I haven’t been doing any drinking. Oh I have a beer now & then but that’s all. I wrote Leila and gave her the word. I didn’t write before due to circumstances beyond my control. I am better and back with my company so I won’t see Edgar any more for a while. I wrote two letters I don’t think you received but I’m sure you will get this one ok. I wrote one before and one after the one to Dad. [Dec 23, 1944] I got all the packages and a lot of cards but I won’t be able to answer every one, the cake was swell. Tell the Sunday School I enjoyed the package very much. Would you do me a favor and put a piece in the paper thanking all the people who have sent me cards and things. I wish I could write them all but that would mean about 50 letters. Everything is about the same except I sure miss the show, that write up was exaggerated quite a lot anyway, it was something that had to be done. We have a new captain and new officers and they seem to be ok. Anyway the change made a brake in the monotony and we have to get used to them. I am working pretty hard now and it is agreeing with me, anyway I am feeling fine. My foot is ok again in fact I can hardly tell it was broken. Say, who mails the Chimes [sic?] to me and is she good looking I hope? You can stop the N.Va. [Daily newspaper] because you tell me most of the news and it gets here too late, anyway. The vast majority are letters from his time serving with the United States Marine Corps in the Pacific Theater during World War Two. Joseph Martin Hines was born in Toms Brook Virginia on December 1, 1923. His parents were Mary Thelma Borden and Duval “Du” Hines. Duval ran a general store in Toms Brook. Joseph Hines attended Toms Brook High School and graduated in 1941. He was a member of the school band, in which he played the clarinet, and of St. Peters Lutheran Church where he sand in the choir. In 1941 he enlisted in the United States Marine Corps. He trained at Parris Island in South Carolina in 1942. Later that year he was transferred to San Diego and later Hawaii. In 1944 he was part of the invasion force that landed at Iwo Jima. After the war he lived in Arlington Virginia and married Ruby Beaver. He died in 1969. Hines Toms Brook Virginia Letter: Dear Mother & All, I have a pretty good reason for not writing sooner. I have been transferred from C. Co. to H&S 24th. I’m now librarian with the Regt. Library and have two pretty Red Cross girls for my bosses. I’ve been pretty busy for the past week but I’ll have more time to write now. I’m not in a rifle company now and my job is strictly recreation. We are starting a new show soon JUST 4 FUN II. I’ll be in it, I guess. Not much to say except I like my job fine and my Boss more. Tell Bill that Faye and I are in the same company now that I got his letter. His letter got here two days after yours. Say Dad looks thin in that picture. He’s not losing his personality (belly) is he? Ha. II Say tell Jayne she owes me a letter (I think) and she had better write or I’ll beat the tar out of a certain “Doggie.” You can show that to Mrs. Fuller, too. Ha. Say Old Man what did you mean am I getting too old to write? You’re still the Boss you know all you gotta do is write and tell me what to do. Tell all the woman around young (over 16) & old (under 30) not to go to pieces. I’ll be home sometime and then they’ll all be pieces. Ha. Better not show that to Mrs. Fuller or I’ll be the talk of the town. Hines Toms Brook Virginia Letter: Dear Mother & All, I don’t know if you are getting my letters or not. I haven’t heard from you the in the last few days so I don’t know what to say. I’m sitting here in the library trying to think and write all at the same time. The work isn’t bad but the hours are rather long. I go to work at 08:00 and get off around 9 thirty or ten o’clock one nite and 7 o’clock the next. Of course I have to get up at 6 and stand inspection at seven thirty. I like the company and the officers fine and of course I like my job. I’m just writing this note to see what had been wrong. I‘ll write more when I have time probably tomorrow. Don’t worry if I ever get so sick I can’t write I’ll have someone to do it for me.
