The photograph was made during his time in the mid-1940’s as a cadet at Massanutten Military Academy (MMA) in Woodstock. Manus was from Brooklyn, New York, the son of Harold Breyer Spanier (1891-1989) and Grace Marguerite (Rapier) (1896-1980) Spanier. His father had immigrated from Austria and was a dentist. Manus R. Spanier graduated from MMA in 1947. Two years later, records show him and his younger sister, Lea, boarding a ship in New York bound for Bremerhaven, Germany. His father, already in Germany, and serving as a Major in a medical unit of the U.S. Army, was sponsoring their trip. Their final destination was Karlsruhe and they intended to spend a year there with him. After his return, Manus attended Albion College in Michigan and then Wake Forest College where he earned his MD in 1957. He then moved to Brooklyn for his Internal Medicine Training at New York Methodist Hospital. There, he met Ann Priscilla Holmes whom he married in 1960. The couple spent the first couple of years of their marriage back in Germany while Manus served with the U.S. Army in Munich. The couples' son, Jim, was born in Brooklyn, and their second son, Mark, was born in Germany. When they came back to America, they moved to Arizona, settling in Prescott by 1965. There, Manus and his wife built and operated a medical office complex for decades. The name, "M.R. Spanier", is written on the glass plate negative of this image. Ruby was the daughter of the late Roy Adison and Helen Virginia (O’Neal) Lichliter. She was a 1941 graduate of Edinburg High School. A year later, she married Carson Marion Lichliter and lived in Fort Valley for several years. Her husband worked at a saw mill and she worked at the Celanese Plant. The couple had three children: Cary Dean, Lana, and Zane Alan Lichliter. She and Carson divorced in 1953 and a year later, her name became Shipe. This second union did not last and in 1967, she married Clayton Jett. She retired from Avtex Fibers in November of 1989, was the recording secretary for the Avtex Retirees Club, and a member of the Jolly 60’s AARP, the Warren County Senior Center and the Riverton United Methodist Church, where she was in charge of Parliaments. (1890-1949) and Nettie Carey (Funkhouser) (1881-1945) Fravel. In 1940, Charles worked as an assistant to the mortician, V.L. Dellinger, in Woodstock. When he registered for the WWII draft, he was still there. He was described as being 6 ft. tall and 140 pounds. He enlisted after high school and served in the U.S. Army as a Private 1st Class from April 1942 to August 1945. In November 1942, while in the Army, he married Mabel Virginia Fansler (1921-2012), in Woodstock. Mabel was from Orkney Springs, the oldest daughter of Boyd Ashby and Edna Blanche (Estep) Fansler. She was a graduate of Triplett High School in Mount Jackson, Virginia. Before marrying, she worked at Shaver's Restaurant in Woodstock, from 1940 until 1942 and then at Wender's Department Store from 1942 until 1944. The 1950 census found Charles and Mabel living in Nashville, Tennessee. They had a 6-year old son, Charles, with them. Their daughter, Deborah Cay Fravel, was born five years later. In 1951, the family moved to Arlington, Virginia, where Charles worked as the funeral director at Murphy's Funeral Home. They retired to Basye in 1983. Court Street in Woodstock after several years of working in the area as a travelling photographer. Between that time, and the time his grandson James Morrison closed the studio in 1988, the Morrison family captured thousands of portraits, landscapes, and buildings on film and glass negatives. In 1999 the Shenandoah County Historical Society acquired over 31,000 of these negatives from the estate of local collector Charles D. Bauserman. Volunteers from the historical society worked over the next several decades to house, number, and scan each image. This effort resulted in over two tons of Morrison plates and negatives being processed and digitized. This collection contains those digitized versions of these photographs. Through a partnership between the historical society and the Shenandoah County Library's Truban Archives access to a growing number of these images is available to the public. Current projections indicate the full collection will be available for viewing sometime in 2028. This collection does contain some images of a sexual and/or graphic nature that some viewers may find inappropriate.
