Court Street in Woodstock after several years of working in the area as a travelling photographer. Between that time, and the time his grandson James Morrison closed the studio in 1988, the Morrison family captured thousands of portraits, landscapes, and buildings on film and glass negatives. In 1999 the Shenandoah County Historical Society acquired over 31,000 of these negatives from the estate of local collector Charles D. Bauserman. Volunteers from the historical society worked over the next several decades to house, number, and scan each image. This effort resulted in over two tons of Morrison plates and negatives being processed and digitized. This collection contains those digitized versions of these photographs. Through a partnership between the historical society and the Shenandoah County Library's Truban Archives access to a growing number of these images is available to the public. Current projections indicate the full collection will be available for viewing sometime in 2028. Douglas grew up in Woodstock, the oldest child of Clarence Lemuel and Vesta Schaeffer Orndorff. In 1920, the family lived in Woodstock where Douglas’ father worked as a machinist at the creamery. Douglas had four younger siblings at that time. He married 21-year old Stella Virginia Combs in April 1938 when he worked as a Drug clerk. She was from Rockingham County and lived in Broadway. Five years later, Douglas enlisted in the Army and became part of the 78th Replacement Battalion, 455th Replacement Company. His rank was “T-4”. He served from June 1943 to November 1945. Douglas and Stella divorced a couple of years after he got out of the military. Less than a year later, he married his second wife, Margret Vernell Webber Hamner (1908-1977) in Harrisonburg, where they both lived. When they married, Douglas was an apprentice embalmer while Margret worked as the manager of the “Smart & Thrifty” store. The 1950 census found the couple living on N. Garfield Street in Arlington where Douglas worked as a mortician in a funeral home. The couple had an 11-year old son, Frank F. Orndorff. Eventually, they moved back to Woodstock, where Douglas died in 1967. He and Margret are both buried in Lynchburg, where she was born. In 1999 the Shenandoah County Historical Society acquired over 31,000 of these negatives from the estate of local collector Charles D. Bauserman. Volunteers from the historical society worked over the next several decades to house, number, and scan each image. This effort resulted in over two tons of Morrison plates and negatives being processed and digitized. This collection contains those digitized versions of these photographs. Through a partnership between the historical society and the Shenandoah County Library's Truban Archives access to a growing number of these images is available to the public. Current projections indicate the full collection will be available for viewing sometime in 2028. Heishman Subject The topic of the resource Heishman, Perry Twyman (1926-1989) United States Civil Air Patrol Description An account of the resource Portrait photograph of Perry T. Heishman as a young man. He is wearing a uniform that indicates he was part of the Civilian Air Patrol during the Second World War, rising to the rank of Second Lieutenant and Commander of the Shenandoah County unit. Perry was born in Edinburg, Virginia, to Perry A. and Jessie (Newland) Heishman. The family farmed in the “Massanutten Mountain” area of the Madison District in 1930 and in the Johnston District in 1940. He had at least two older brothers, Lester and William. Perry graduated from Edinburg High School. Soon after, he enlisted in the U.S. Air Force and spent his career in the military where he was posted to bases both in the country and overseas. When he died, his obituary in the Honolulu newspaper noted he was a retired flight engineer with the U.S. Air Force at Hickam Air Force Base near Pearl Harbor. He married Jeannie Rose (Chareau) Heishman who was born in Algiers, and was French. It is likely they met during Perry's overseas WWII service. The couple raised two children together, Charles and Louise. The marriage did not last and Perry moved to Mississippi. At the end of his life, he was still there when he was struck and killed by an automobile while walking along a busy road. His is buried in Honolulu, Hawaii.
