Wrightson Samuel Tongue was a Methodist Minister, born in Kingston, New York. His parents were N.M. Charles Tongue and Lucy (Felter) Tongue. While a young minister, he met and married Elizabeth Mae Modisher in Salem, Ohio, in June 1940. She was from Sharpsburg Pennsylvania, the daughter of James M. and Anna (Lee) Modisher. When he registered for the WWII draft in October 1940, W.S. and his wife lived in Meadville, PA, where his employer was listed as the Methodist Church in Eureka, Erie, Pennsylvania. The 1941 yearbook for Allegheny College in Meadville, Pennsylvania, included him as a student. At least one of their older children, son James Melvin, was born in New Market, Shenandoah County, Virginia. City Directories from 1953 and 1954 show W.S. Tongue working as a “Pastor” in the Norfolk area. Later City Directories found him in Lynchburg, usually at the address: 1503 Sherbrooke Drive. He and his wife had many children together. Mentioned in his May 2013 obituary were four sons: W.S. Jr., James Melvin, William Lee, and Donald Vincent, and four daughters: Judy, Annette, Donna and Sharon. The name, "Rev. W.S. Tongue", the town, "Edinburg", and the date, "7/7/4?" are written on the glass plate of this image. Charlotte was one of many children born to Oliver Milton (1898-1980) and Florence Virginia (Fogle) (1900-1994) Funk. Charlotte was a lifelong Woodstock resident and member of the St. John Bosco Catholic Church there. In August 1946, she married Miguel "Mike" Angel Chelini, Jr. (1924-1992), a graduate of MMA born in Venezuela. He was a Spanish teacher at Central High School for several years and active in the community. Two years later, the couple bought a house and 3 acres near Readus, west of Woodstock, for $7,000. During their years together, the Northern Virginia Daily newspaper reported on several of their family’s milestones including a visit from Mike’s relatives from Venezuela, the birth of their son, Michael, and a large 50th wedding anniversary party held at their home for Charlotte’s grandparents. Mike and Charlotte had two sons, Michael III, and Richardo Anthony Chellini. Unfortunately, Richardo died unexpectedly when he was just 18 years old. Annabelle lived in Edinburg and was the daughter of Lester Earl (1899-1994) and Margie Jane (Fadeley) (1904-1990) Polk. In 1945, she married Walter David Clem (1923-1995), a 22-year old Navy man born in Fort Valley to Tobias Samuel and Maggie Catherine (Walters) Clem. The marriage did not work out well and by the 1950 census, Annabelle was back at home with her parents and working as a bookkeeper for a fruit & produce company. The couple divorced about a year later. Walter was working as a street car conductor in Washington D.C., while Annabelle was still in Edinburg. Annabelle remained in Shenandoah County for the rest of her life. She did not have children. She was working as a mortgage loan clerk at a bank when she died suddenly and unexpectedly of an aneurism. Her mother, Margie Polk, was the informant on the death certificate. Charlotte was one of many children born to Oliver Milton (1898-1980) and Florence Virginia (Fogle) (1900-1994) Funk. Charlotte was a lifelong Woodstock resident and member of the St. John Bosco Catholic Church there. In August 1946, she married Miguel "Mike" Angel Chelini, Jr. (1924-1992), a graduate of MMA born in Venezuela. He was a Spanish teacher at Central High School for several years and active in the community. Two years later, the couple bought a house and 3 acres near Readus, west of Woodstock, for $7,000. During their years together, the Northern Virginia Daily newspaper reported on several of their family’s milestones including a visit from Mike’s relatives from Venezuela, the birth of their son, Michael, and a large 50th wedding anniversary party held at their home for Charlotte’s grandparents. Mike and Charlotte had two sons, Michael III, and Richardo Anthony Chellini. Unfortunately, Richardo died unexpectedly when he was just 18 years old. Michael “Mickey” Angel Chellini, III, grew up in Woodstock. As a child, he played tennis in the local league and attended Central High School initially. Then, in September, 1963, he was one of only twelve day students (in a class of 350 cadets) entering Massanutten Academy for its 65th year. The 1966 MMA yearbook includes his photograph with these accolades: “Corporal … Asst. Squad Leader … Junior Varsity Football … Thousand Merit Club … Gearing Rifles … Ambition: Engineer … 3 years at MMA … Poe.” In 1972, Mickey married Patricia Ann Barb (1952 - ). She was born in Orkney Springs to Philip William Barb, Sr., and Ruby Florence (Biller) Barb. The couple had at least one son and raised their family in the Woodstock area. Court Street in Woodstock after several years of working in the area as a travelling photographer. Between that time, and the time his grandson James Morrison closed the studio in 1988, the Morrison family captured thousands of portraits, landscapes, and buildings on film and glass negatives. In 1999 the Shenandoah County Historical Society acquired over 31,000 of these negatives from the estate of local collector Charles D. Bauserman. Volunteers from the historical society worked over the next several decades to house, number, and scan each image. This effort resulted in over two tons of Morrison plates and negatives being processed and digitized. This collection contains those digitized versions of these photographs. Through a partnership between the historical society and the Shenandoah County Library's Truban Archives access to a growing number of these images is available to the public. Current projections indicate the full collection will be available for viewing sometime in 2028. This collection does contain some images of a sexual and/or graphic nature that some viewers may find inappropriate. The patch on his shoulder indicates he served in the Army ROTC. Buddy spent most of his life in the military as his obituary in the Northern Virginia Daily (December 16, 2010) reported. The excerpt below is from his record on the Find-A-Grave website. He was born in Majestic, KY, but grew up in Edinburg, where his mother worked for the telephone company. He ran away from home in 1938 (about the time of this photograph) to join the Army "to help support the family." He was 15. He caught pneumonia in basic training. The Red Cross contacted his mother. The Army sent him home when they realized he was too young. He rejoined the Army when he was 17 in August 1940. During World War II, he was assigned to the 8th Signal Corps, 502nd Parachute Infantry Regiment, 101st Airborne Division. On D-Day, June 6, 1944 at 12:06 a.m., he jumped behind German lines into Normandy. He saw heavy combat and was awarded two Purple Hearts. After the successful Normandy invasion, the 101st fought its way north through France, Holland and Belgium, where the Germans surrounded the 101st at Bastogne. The heavy artillery bombardment lasted from Dec. 20-27, 1944. "I was never more scared in my life," he once said. He was discharged after the war at Fort Meade, Maryland. When he returned home, he worked at the Sinclair station. He later married Ernestine Coffman (1924-2005), (Virginia Coffman's sister). He re-enlisted into the Signal Corps on Jan. 13, 1948. He soon had a three-year assignment in occupied Germany. He became a commissioned officer in 1952, served a tour in Korea, then retired from the Army in 1964. He worked for Sears for six years in farm and fencing and was the top salesman. He finished his working days as an assistant field director for the Red Cross. Capt. Mitchell left behind his son, Mitch, and daughters, Deborah and Diane Mitchell.
