The 1940 census found the family living together on a farm near Edinburg (Madison District). All three children were raised there. Ola Mae married Oliver Newton Peer (1922-2013), who was born Maurertown and attended Toms Brook High School, graduating in 1941. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II with the 638th Tank Destroyer Battalion, fighting in the Battle of the Bulge and receiving the Bronze Star. He later owned and operated the Woodstock Coin Shop. Both Ola and her husband were longtime and active members of the Edinburg Christian Church as well as other civic organizations in the area. Ola was also known for her beautiful tatting during her later years. After her husband died, she moved to North Carolina for a short time at the end of her life. Both she and her husband are buried in Sunset View Memorial Gardens in Woodstock. Katherine Marie “Kay” Fadeley married Garrett Odell Smoot (1922-1968) in February 1945 in Washington D.C. Six years later, when their son, Larry Allen Smoot (1951-1984), was born they lived in Arlington, Virginia. By 1957, when their daughter, Kathy Ann Smoot (1957-2021) was born, they had moved back to Shenandoah County. When Kay’s husband died, they lived in the Narrow Passage Creek area near Edinburg. Warren moved to Washington D.C. as a young man. When he registered for the WWII draft in 1942, he lived at 1431 N Street, N.W. and worked for the Sears Roebuck & Co. on Georgia Avenue, N.W. Physically, he was described as 5’ 5 1/2” tall and weighed 135 pounds. He married a woman named Louise (from Shenandoah County) in Rockville, Maryland, in 1942. Soon after, he served as a PFC in the U.S. Army during WWII. After the war, the couple divorced in 1946. A year later, Warren lived in Washington, D.C. and married Nancy Lee (Triggs) (1928-2017) from Albemarle County. By 1950, the census found them living in Arlington, Virginia, where Warren worked as a Route Salesman for a laundry corporation and Nancy worked as a clerk typist for a retail credit association. Louise was the oldest of five children born to Benjamin Eli (1903-1978) and Sada Catherine (Coffman) (1903-2002) Lambert. When she was quite young, her parents rented a farm in the Madison District of Shenandoah County. By 1940, the family owned a farm in the Stonewall District. In 1947, Louise accepted a position as a clerk at the old Ben Franklin on North Main Street in downtown Woodstock. She did a little bit of everything, from unpacking merchandise to cleaning the counters, but she was mostly known for her feature bins, which held popular items like plush bunnies, ducks, or seasonal decor. About six months later, Louise married the boss’s son, Donald Herbert Garman (1917-1989). By 1950, the couple lived in Woodstock and had a 10-month old daughter, Constance “Connee” L. Garman. Three additional children arrived later. In 1966, Ben Franklin moved to the Woodstock Shopping Center and by 1968 it included a drugstore and a small diner that seated 16. In 1976, when the Safeway moved out, Ben’s Diner moved to where it sits today, allowing the diner and Ben Franklin to be joined via doors. In October 2010, Ben Franklin closed its doors permanently. Louise continued her work at Ben’s Diner, and became known for her holiday stuffing every year. The line of waiting customers would stretch outside when it was available. In June 2023, Louise retired from Ben’s Diner after a career that spanned 76 years. She was 96 years old and still sharp. Volunteers from the historical society worked over the next several decades to house, number, and scan each image. This effort resulted in over two tons of Morrison plates and negatives being processed and digitized. This collection contains those digitized versions of these photographs.
