Taken by Mt. Jackson photographer Hoyle Garber, the photograph was most likely used to market the service station when it opened in the late 1940s. Pictured are two unidentified station attendants and Dr. George Parrot of New Market with his automobile. This station was located at the intersection of Routes 11 and 211, two of the region's major highways. Before the introduction of the Interstate Highway System, this area would have been filled with cars travelling to Luray Caverns, Washington DC, and many other points. A gas station here would have certainly been a profitable business. Based on the photograph, the New Market gulf was a full service business that offered car washes, maintenance, parts, and of course, gasoline. The original station design reflects the clean, sleek, art deco design popular in the period. Today, this site continues to serve the community as a gas station, though its name has changed to Liberty and the building is remarkably different. Title A name given to the resource Shenandoah County (Va) Boys Leaving Woodstock for Camp Humphries Subject The topic of the resource World War (1914-1918) Shenandoah County (Va) Description An account of the resource On July 26th, 1918 local photographer Hugh Morrison took this photograph of local men preparing to basic training at Camp Humphries, now Fort Belvoir, in Fairfax County Virginia. It was taken on the steps of the Woodstock Depot. It was from here that most Shenandoah County men departed for service in the conflict after being sworn in at the historic courthouse two blocks away. After a national draft was instituted in 1917, these departures became commonplace. Several hundred men and women from the area would go off to war. Most would become part of the US Army and would receive basic training at Camp Humphries or Camp Lee. Scores would go overseas. Several would never return. The names of the men in this photograph are unknown. If you can identify them, please let us know. Title A name given to the resource Peach Seed Shipment at the Woodstock Depot Subject The topic of the resource World War, 1914-1918 Woodstock (Va) Description An account of the resource In 1915 the German Army released the effective Chlorine gas attack of World War One against British positions in Ypres. Before the end of the war these types of Chemical agents would kill or injure millions of men on both sides. To combat these poisons a gas mask was developed that utilized charcoal to filter incoming air. One of the most effective sources of the charcoal needed came from peach seeds. After entering the war in 1917 the US government launched a massive drive to collect peach pits for its soldier’s masks. This photograph shows the results of one such drive in Shenandoah County. Local boy scouts and citizens pose at the Woodstock depot with a large shipment of peach pits obtained through the Chapin-Sacks Company. The scouts and those who helped them appear to be proud of the large amount of life saving materials they were providing. Collections of these materials, and other types of drives, would continue in the county throughout WWI. Most of these items, and many others would be shipped from the railroad depot which served the community until it was demolished in the 1950s. Chapin-Sacks, which produced ice and refrigerated products such as peaches, would be purchased by the Southern Dairy in the 1920s. Production ceased there in the 1970s and the North Street site became the Town of Woodstock’s Public Works facility. Today, it is abandoned.
