Wrightson Samuel Tongue was a Methodist Minister, born in Kingston, New York. His parents were N.M. Charles Tongue and Lucy (Felter) Tongue. While a young minister, he met and married Elizabeth Mae Modisher in Salem, Ohio, in June 1940. She was from Sharpsburg Pennsylvania, the daughter of James M. and Anna (Lee) Modisher. When he registered for the WWII draft in October 1940, W.S. and his wife lived in Meadville, PA, where his employer was listed as the Methodist Church in Eureka, Erie, Pennsylvania. The 1941 yearbook for Allegheny College in Meadville, Pennsylvania, included him as a student. At least one of their older children, son James Melvin, was born in New Market, Shenandoah County, Virginia. City Directories from 1953 and 1954 show W.S. Tongue working as a “Pastor” in the Norfolk area. Later City Directories found him in Lynchburg, usually at the address: 1503 Sherbrooke Drive. He and his wife had many children together. Mentioned in his May 2013 obituary were four sons: W.S. Jr., James Melvin, William Lee, and Donald Vincent, and four daughters: Judy, Annette, Donna and Sharon. The name, "Rev. W.S. Tongue", the town, "Edinburg", and the date, "7/7/4?" are written on the glass plate of this image. His hat shows the "50 mission crush", a telltale sign of a missing stiffener. Normally, this cap had stiffeners – a support piece behind the cap device and a wire around the inside top perimeter to maintain the cap's round shape. However, since pilots wore headsets over their caps during flights, they would remove the wire stiffener to make headset wear more comfortable, causing the sides of the caps to become crushed. Eventually, the caps retained their floppy "crushed" look, giving the pilot who wore it the look of a seasoned veteran, like in this photograph. The crush cap identified its wearer as an experienced pro, and was as much a part of his identity as his leather flight jacket. Initially, the property included 4 acres and bordered the river behind it. The owner, Mr. Wyatt, auctioned the bathing beach, equipment and the 4 acres on July 29, 1939, leaving him with the Recreation Hall only. Several advertisements from 1939 and 1940 in the Northern Virginia newspaper advertise that square dances were held every Wednesday and Saturday night at the hall. One ad from 1940 noted the admission was 40 cents per couple. The 1938 and 1939 Northern Virginia Checkers Tournament was held at Wyatt's Recreation Hall as well. The building still stands today and has been converted into apartments. Court Street in Woodstock after several years of working in the area as a travelling photographer. Between that time, and the time his grandson James Morrison closed the studio in 1988, the Morrison family captured thousands of portraits, landscapes, and buildings on film and glass negatives. In 1999 the Shenandoah County Historical Society acquired over 31,000 of these negatives from the estate of local collector Charles D. Bauserman. Volunteers from the historical society worked over the next several decades to house, number, and scan each image. This effort resulted in over two tons of Morrison plates and negatives being processed and digitized. This collection contains those digitized versions of these photographs. Through a partnership between the historical society and the Shenandoah County Library's Truban Archives access to a growing number of these images is available to the public. Current projections indicate the full collection will be available for viewing sometime in 2028. This collection does contain some images of a sexual and/or graphic nature that some viewers may find inappropriate.
