An amateur archeologist, Helen maintained a collection of native rocks, fossils, artifacts, and petrified wood and joined digs throughout the Valley with archeological teams. She was also an active volunteer with the New Market Area Library and other local literacy groups. Campbell became a clerk at the post office in Woodstock. A Shenandoah Valley-Herald report on her hiring noted she had a high score of over 96 on the Civil Service examination needed to secure that position. According to Postmaster Charles Sheetz, she was the first female employee of that office. A native of Edinburg Virginia, Dorothy was 27 years old and had formerly worked at the Edinburg Aileen Plant.
