Jackson Description An account of the resource Bonnie Mawyer came to Shenandoah County in 1975. Her and her husband Roger moved to the Avendale Acres subdivision in Mt. Jackson after he was hired to manage the WSIG radio station. A third grade teacher at New Market Elementary School, Bonnie was especially interested in programs that permitted “students to go at their own pace.” In her spare time Bonnie reported she loved gardening where they grew "tomatoes, peppers, spinach, green beans, and corn." She also cooked, specializing in "fatting goodies" and making preserves. Other activities included painting ceramics, quilting, bowling, and playing volleyball. Campbell became a clerk at the post office in Woodstock. A Shenandoah Valley-Herald report on her hiring noted she had a high score of over 96 on the Civil Service examination needed to secure that position. According to Postmaster Charles Sheetz, she was the first female employee of that office. A native of Edinburg Virginia, Dorothy was 27 years old and had formerly worked at the Edinburg Aileen Plant. Biographical Text A native of New Market, and student of local history, Helen Bingham was proud of the fact that her ancestors owned Stanley Hall and that her parents managed the Pythian Children’s Home that operated there for many years in the mid 20th century. An amateur archeologist, Helen maintained a collection of native rocks, fossils, artifacts, and petrified wood and joined digs throughout the Valley with archeological teams. She was also an active volunteer with the New Market Area Library and other local literacy groups. Her classes published the award winning student newspaper “Ram Page.” Outside school she dreamed of a “career either in drama or voice.” Irene sang with local radio groups, read poetry and drama on WINC, and wrote several plays. She also played tennis, fished, raised flowers, and camped with her husband Truman. Declaring “Nothing gives me more satisfaction than to be able to help others,” she promoted personal care and relationships with patients. A WWII veteran who served in the US Navy, Jackie enjoyed drives in the country and had two daughters. While living in Shenandoah County, Joan was active with the Shenandoah County Memorial Hospital Auxiliary where she helped provide transportation services for patients, and was a disaster volunteer with the local chapter of the American Red Cross. Prior to that, Kaye had worked for the Arlington County Police Department as their secretary for 27 years. The couple found established retirement home in Fort Valley Virginia, near St. David's Church. Nicknamed "Shelpine" it was a place she found time to enjoy her hobbies of sewing and enjoying her beautiful surroundings. Kaye and her husband also enjoyed dancing and she noted "we got to every dance we can." Kaye also operated the Suffed Pepper Gift Shop in Woodstock which she purchased in 1975.
