Title A name given to the resource May Cecelia Whitaker Rinker Subject The topic of the resource Rinker, May Cecelia Whitaker (1901-1982) Women-Virginia-Shenandoah County Description An account of the resource Photograph of May Cecelia Whitaker Rinker. Published in the Shenandoah Herald on April 10, 1969 as part of their "Country Kitchens" series. May Whitaker Rinker was born May 1, 1901 in Shenandoah County. She married Garnett L. Rinker Sr. They had two children Garnett Rinker Jr. and James Rinker. Garnett Rinker Jr. was killed in action on June 6, 1944 while serving with the US Army during the Normandy Invasion. Mary lived on a farm near Woodstock for her entire life. At one time she was known for her butter from five Guernseys cows. She would churn 28 pounds of butter at a time and sell it in one pound blocks. Later in her life she established extensive flower gardens growing peonies, begonias, dahlias, and amaryllis which decorated her home and church. She also sold some of her flowers as a way to support her garden. Mary died on September 8 1982 and is buried in Massanutten Cemetery in Woodstock. Title A name given to the resource Harold "Sparky" Sutphin Subject The topic of the resource Sutphin, Harold Korean War, 1950-1953 Description An account of the resource A picture of Harold "Sparky" Sutphin. It appeared in the Shenandoah Herald when they reported he had been killed in action on November 9, 1950. He was 20 years old. Harold had deployed to Korea as part of 38th Infantry Division which was operating in North Korea at the time. Sutphin is buried somewhere in that country. He was survived by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Lawerence Sutphin, two sisters, a grandmother, and his wife Mureta. They had been married on May 9th. Korean War, 1950-1953 Description An account of the resource Pictured here is Jacob C. Saylor (left) with his Army buddy Corporal Lippki. Both were machine gunners in the Korean War. The image appeared in the Shenandoah Herald. Jacob C. Saylor was a New Market native that deployed to Korea on July 31st 1950 as a part of the 2nd Infantry Division. He fought in actions related to the defense of the Pusan Perimeter. He nicknamed his machine gun "Anna Belle." On August 31, 1950 Saylor was wounded and evacuated to Japan. He left the army in 1953 and currently residents in Broadway Virginia. Title A name given to the resource Corporal Linden Zirkle Subject The topic of the resource Zirkle, Linden Korean War, 1950-1953 Description An account of the resource This photo shows Corporal Linden Zirkle of New Market fusing a tank mine somewhere in South Korea. It appeared on the front page of the September 7, 1950 Shenandoah Herald. At the time the United States forces in Korea were attempting to stop the North Korean advance into the south. Zirkle was a member of the 25th Infantry, nicknamed “Tropic Lightning.” Corporal Zirkle was captured by the North Koreans in December of 1950 and would remain a captive until released in August of 1953. He returned to the New Market area and died on September 13, 1965 at the age of 38. Dellinger Subject The topic of the resource Dellinger, Nevin Korean War, 1950-1953 Description An account of the resource Nevin P. Dellinger was born in New Market in 1932. He graduated from New Market High School in 1950 and the same year enlisted in the US Army for a three year period. Dellinger deployed to Korea as a part of the 15th Infantry Division where he served in a motor vehicle company. A report on his service in the Shenandoah Herald noted his letters observed “fighting was severe and the soldiers’ sleeping quarters for most part were in fox holes.” Nevin Dellinger continues to live in the New Market community of Shenandoah County. Title A name given to the resource "Volunteers Needed For Lookout Posts" Subject The topic of the resource World War, 1939-1945 Woodstock (Va) Description An account of the resource This article appeared in the December 12, 1941 edition of the Shenandoah Herald. In it local defense official Cecil Newcorn announced he had received a message ordering the county's lookout posts to be manned around the clock. Eventually sixteen of these posts would be operated throughout the county. These posts became a integral part of life in Shenandoah County during the war years. Hundreds of area residents volunteered to staff them. Like other war related activities, like Civil Defense clubs, scrap drives, and bond sales, they became a way for residents to participate in the war even if they were not directly involved in the fighting. A social aspect also developed as these events replaced the pre-war community programs. The program allowed civilians to be trained to fly aircraft in advance of any induction into military service. It was sponsored by the Civilian Aeronautics Authority and the Chamber of Commerce.
