Title A name given to the resource Regina Karmy Subject The topic of the resource Karmy, Regina Description An account of the resource When the Shenandoah Valley-Herald highlighted the work of Dr. Regina Karmy, they noted she believed “a woman’s place is in the home.” They also observed she just as firmly believed she was “entitled to a place in the operating room.” Dr. Karmy, who specialized in obstetrics and gynecology, certainly understood the challenge of being Shenandoah County’s first woman doctor and a mother of three. Regina came to Shenandoah County in 1978 with her husband Robert who was a partner in her practice. She lived a busy life holding office hours, performing surgery, delivering babies, and caring for her three children. While Dr. Karmy noted being the county’s first woman doctor was a little challenging, she never “felt unwanted or unwelcome being a woman doctor.” In fact, she observed she filled a gap in service with women who were often uncomfortable talking about their problems with male doctors. Campbell became a clerk at the post office in Woodstock. A Shenandoah Valley-Herald report on her hiring noted she had a high score of over 96 on the Civil Service examination needed to secure that position. According to Postmaster Charles Sheetz, she was the first female employee of that office. A native of Edinburg Virginia, Dorothy was 27 years old and had formerly worked at the Edinburg Aileen Plant. They moved to the Pughs Run area in 1967. She worked as a nurse at Shenandoah Memorial Hospital until opening her shop in 1974. Calvary Lutheran Church, and the Shenandoah County Cancer Society. She also painted and collected flowers while spending time at her cabin home. Biographical Text Nancy, a native of New Jersey, turned her hobby into a business. After buying the Smith farm in 1972, she became passionate about antique collecting. A couple years later, she opened an antique shop in what used to be the farm’s chicken coop. Thanks to her children, Nancy also became interested in horses. Her husband built a horse stall to keep their 19 horses, with one of them being an Arabian Stallion. Title A name given to the resource Solomons Lutheran Church Christmas Card Subject The topic of the resource Solomons Lutheran Church (New Market Va) Description An account of the resource In 1793 Henrich and Dorthea Rausch offered to provide land an almost no cost for members of the Forestville community to construct a church on. The community accepted the offer because the area’s growing population, which had originally travelled long distances to either Old Pine Church or Raders Church, needed a closer site for worship. Thus began Solomons Church. Originally both Lutheran and Reformed Congregations met in the original church building which was completed in 1795. In 1851 these two groups decided to construct their own churches, In 1876 the current Solomons Lutheran Church was built immediately adjacent to the original church building which was sold and later demolished. In 1915 the church’s Sunday School classes distributed this Christmas card. Most likely it was sent to members of the congregation. It lists the class rolls and teachers, whose last names are still prominent in the area. On the front of the card is a photograph of the church building complete with separate entrances for men and women. The photograph also highlights just how rural of a congregation Solomons was and remains. However, the number of names listed, the design of the card, and the church itself indicates the congregation at the time was large and devoted. Today, a declining local population means the church, and many like it in areas of the county, are dealing with declining membership and the funds needed to operate.
