Merriam Subject The topic of the resource Liberty Furnace (Va) Merriam, William Rush Maddox, Samuel Description An account of the resource This letter was sent by Samuel Maddox, an attorney in Washington DC, to William Rush (W.R.) Merriam, President of the Shenandoah Iron and Coal Company, on November 23 1908. It discusses Maddox's recent visit to the Liberty Furnace area and some of the activities he engaged in after returning to Washington. William Maddox had served as Governor of Minnesota from 1889-1892 and first director of the US Census Bureau from 1898-1903. He served as President and principal owner of the Shenandoah Iron and Coal Company from 1905-ca. 1910. The operated Liberty Iron Furnace and the Dinky Railroad. Dellinger Subject The topic of the resource Dellinger, Nevin Korean War, 1950-1953 Description An account of the resource Nevin P. Dellinger was born in New Market in 1932. He graduated from New Market High School in 1950 and the same year enlisted in the US Army for a three year period. Dellinger deployed to Korea as a part of the 15th Infantry Division where he served in a motor vehicle company. A report on his service in the Shenandoah Herald noted his letters observed “fighting was severe and the soldiers’ sleeping quarters for most part were in fox holes.” Nevin Dellinger continues to live in the New Market community of Shenandoah County. Title A name given to the resource Corporal Linden Zirkle Subject The topic of the resource Zirkle, Linden Korean War, 1950-1953 Description An account of the resource This photo shows Corporal Linden Zirkle of New Market fusing a tank mine somewhere in South Korea. It appeared on the front page of the September 7, 1950 Shenandoah Herald. At the time the United States forces in Korea were attempting to stop the North Korean advance into the south. Zirkle was a member of the 25th Infantry, nicknamed “Tropic Lightning.” Corporal Zirkle was captured by the North Koreans in December of 1950 and would remain a captive until released in August of 1953. He returned to the New Market area and died on September 13, 1965 at the age of 38. Korean War, 1950-1953 Description An account of the resource Pictured here is Jacob C. Saylor (left) with his Army buddy Corporal Lippki. Both were machine gunners in the Korean War. The image appeared in the Shenandoah Herald. Jacob C. Saylor was a New Market native that deployed to Korea on July 31st 1950 as a part of the 2nd Infantry Division. He fought in actions related to the defense of the Pusan Perimeter. He nicknamed his machine gun "Anna Belle." On August 31, 1950 Saylor was wounded and evacuated to Japan. He left the army in 1953 and currently residents in Broadway Virginia. It appeared in the Shenandoah Herald when they reported he had been killed in action on November 9, 1950. He was 20 years old. Harold had deployed to Korea as part of 38th Infantry Division which was operating in North Korea at the time. Sutphin is buried somewhere in that country. He was survived by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Lawerence Sutphin, two sisters, a grandmother, and his wife Mureta. They had been married on May 9th. Harold Ritenour was born in Woodstock Virginia on March 25 1925. He served in World War Two with the U.S. Marine Corps. After the war he remained in the reserves and was activated to serve in the Korean conflict. Harold deployed to Korea in 1950 with the 1st Marine Division. On March 3rd, 1951, he was wounded in the shoulder but recovered and returned to Korea. He regularly served on the front lines. After the war, he returned to his wife and children in Woodstock. It appeared in the Shenandoah Herald on September 7, 1950 when the paper announced he had been killed in action in Korea. On September 7, 1950 the Shenandoah Herald Private James E. McKenzie, 18, of Quicksburg was killed in action while serving in Korea. He was the first county resident to die in the conflict. McKenzie was a graduate of the New Market High School Class of 1949. He volunteered for the US Army after graduating, was assigned to the 23rd Infantry Regiment, and deployed to the conflict zone in July of 1950, almost immediately after the war began. His parents, G.M. and Florence McKenzie as well as 5 brothers, 3 sisters, and his grandparents survived him. Mother I know “Margie” is young and expect her to go out and if she don’t wait for me I’ll understand but up till now she is tops I haven’t found any- thing out here to equal her. Maby I’m growing up I’m almost 20 you know. over I am beginning to feel proud of my outfit and My self we made 30 miles in 9 hours Carrying 60 lbs. and a rifle and I’m bragging now we only lost 30 men out of over ___ and the third lost 200 in 10 ½ hrs. boy were we dead. Title A name given to the resource Shenandoah County (Va) Boys Leaving Woodstock for Camp Humphries Subject The topic of the resource World War (1914-1918) Shenandoah County (Va) Description An account of the resource On July 26th, 1918 local photographer Hugh Morrison took this photograph of local men preparing to basic training at Camp Humphries, now Fort Belvoir, in Fairfax County Virginia. It was taken on the steps of the Woodstock Depot. It was from here that most Shenandoah County men departed for service in the conflict after being sworn in at the historic courthouse two blocks away. After a national draft was instituted in 1917, these departures became commonplace. Several hundred men and women from the area would go off to war. Most would become part of the US Army and would receive basic training at Camp Humphries or Camp Lee. Scores would go overseas. Several would never return. The names of the men in this photograph are unknown. If you can identify them, please let us know.
