Occupation Enslaved Person Biographical Text On September 30, 1838, Isaac, a runaway, was confined to jail. According to court documents, as of October 7, 1839, Christian Miller, the jailer, had paid a total of $135.14 in jail fees and newspaper advertisements. The court ordered for the sheriff to sell Isaac in a public sale and to advertise the sale for one month. On October 8, 1839, Christian Miller presented an additional sum of $18.57 and a half for "housing, dieting, and clothes of Isaac." The court allowed to have Isaac sold that day. In a newspaper advertisement for Isaac's sale, Sheriff Hottel noted that Isaac would "in all probability, a good farm hand."
