She was born in Mt. Clifton, one of eight children born to Clarence Phillips and Fannie (Olinger) Phillips. Her father was a miller. She graduated from Triplett High School at the age of 16 and from Winchester Memorial Hospital Training School for Nurses in 1943. While in the U.S. Army, she met her husband, Alton Wilson, in the Officer's Club. She served as a Lieutenant Nurse in the psychiatric ward, treating pilots returning from the war, 1944-1945. Arvella married Alton Duane Wilson (1922-1999) in San Antonio, Texas, on February 23, 1945. They shared 54 years of marriage and raised three children. She continued her nursing career until her retirement in 1980. She lived in Florida for many years before moving to Oklahoma where she spent her last years. Earl grew up in Woodstock and lived with his grandmother, Lizzie Dyer, and his mother, Mary Dyer (1908-1947), for several years on W. Spring Street. His father was Frank Brock. Earl was 18 years old when he registered for the WWII draft. At the time, he was a student at the Manassas Industrial School in Manassas, Virginia. He was described as being 5’7” tall and 130 pounds. He enlisted in the Army and served from January 1946 to May 1947, when he was discharged. The 1950 census found him back on W. Spring Street in his grandmother’s household. He was not working and his Aunt Ella M. and Uncle John, lived there as well. He married Audrey Elynor Alsberry, the daughter of Jordan and Roberta Bell (Adams) Alsberry. She was from Strasburg. Their marriage lasted many years but ended in divorce. When he died, the Northern Virginia Daily published an obituary that noted “he had been employed by Shenandoah Telephone Co. He also was a barber, music teacher, cook at Shenandoah Memorial Hospital and played piano for many functions in the area. He was a member of Mt. Zion Lutheran Church in Woodstock, serving as choir director and pianist. Title A name given to the resource Morrison Studio Collection Subject The topic of the resource Morrison, Hugh Jr. (1871-1950) Morrison, Louis Morrison, James Description An account of the resource In 1899 Hugh Morrison Jr. opened a photograph studio on W. Court Street in Woodstock after several years of working in the area as a travelling photographer. Between that time, and the time his grandson James Morrison closed the studio in 1988, the Morrison family captured thousands of portraits, landscapes, and buildings on film and glass negatives. In 1999 the Shenandoah County Historical Society acquired over 31,000 of these negatives from the estate of local collector Charles D. Bauserman. Volunteers from the historical society worked over the next several decades to house, number, and scan each image. This effort resulted in over two tons of Morrison plates and negatives being processed and digitized. This collection contains those digitized versions of these photographs. Through a partnership between the historical society and the Shenandoah County Library's Truban Archives access to a growing number of these images is available to the public. Current projections indicate the full collection will be available for viewing sometime in 2028. This collection does contain some images of a sexual and/or graphic nature that some viewers may find inappropriate.
